K-pop group BTS appointed special diplomatic envoys by South Korean president
Members of the K-pop sensation BTS have now taken on a formal diplomatic role as “special presidential envoy for future generations and culture”, conferred upon them by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
According to The Korea Herald, a ceremony was held in Seoul on Tuesday in which the president conferred the title upon the band and handed them their diplomatic passports along with fountain pens. The group's first assignment is to accompany the president to the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which began on Tuesday.
The group will attend a meeting on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by all UN member states in 2015. They will will give a speech on September 20 and preview a video performance.
As reported in The Korea Herald, President Moon said the United Nations had requested BTS accompany him to the Sustainable Development Goals meeting to represent the global youth. “That itself shows the enhanced global stature of South Korea,” he said in a statement from the presidential office
The president congratulated members of the BTS on their recent success on Billboard with their album Butter and declared himself a fan.
