Going Loco for Local: Make your K-drama dreams come true with Danny’s kimchi

It's crunchy, spicy and most importantly good for your gut!

Ever watched your favourite Korean drama actor enjoy a big bite of kimchi alongside their meal? Or your favourite K-pop idol chow it down with instant noodles? Ever wanted to try the bright red veggie concoction? Well, Danny’s is making dreams come true with their delicious homemade kimchi.

According to their website, Danny spent four years with his Korean roommate in college in the 80s, where he learned the art of making kimchi.

I brought a jar of their kimchi online in an effort to make kimchi fried rice. I had heard tales of the fermented treat being very pungent and sharp, so when I finally received the jar, I opened it very gingerly and tried the tiniest bite. The flavours were bold, to say the least.

The kimchi tasted spicy, with undertones of bitterness, slight sourness, as well as just the right amount of sweetness. The best part? The vegetables — which include napa cabbage, onions, carrots and radishes — were still fresh and crunchy even though they had been marinating in the jar for a while.

Kimchi does taste better as an accompaniment to food, especially rice and noodle-based meals. The vegetables add texture and freshness, and of course, the marinade makes the whole affair spicer.

Kimchi is a bit of an acquired taste and not everyone will love it, but if you try it as a side dish, it will definitely blow your socks off. For people who love pickles, spicy or fermented food, this jar of kimchi is a must-buy.

The jar costs Rs1,200 for 270 grams and comes in two flavours: original and hot (trust me and get the original flavour, it’s spicy enough). It is available on their website for delivery in Karachi, and at select stores throughout Karachi.

I give Danny’s 5/5 stars for its taste and because kimchi is difficult to find in Pakistan, but Danny’s is changing that.

I do not understand why local brands are so pricey; Rs. 1,200 for 270 grams is a lot of money that only the wealthy and elite can afford.

Elitism. Local products are very expensive. Chinese imports are high quality and inexpensive. Allow Chinese imports without any taxes. Let the masses enjoy quality and inexpensive things.

I love kimchi as a side dish with rice and pasta. It is an acquired taste and I got used to it during my many trips to Korea. I live in Virginia USA where this is available in most of the stores and I pay a lot more than PKR 2,100 which comes to about $3.50.

Way overpriced for a food fad. It should not cost more than the average achaar bottle.

It’s very authentic and I love it with my fried egg and rice. My favourite are their sundried tomatoes, pesto and sundried butter. Danny’s is rocking ❤️

True local brands i have been trying ro follow and but are insanely expensive for no reason if made from local products. Dont know when will our local producers realise making things affordable to masses makes their sale increase. Many import products like makeup and food are much cheaper in price than our home made ones.
