‘He was never trying to play Kamala’: Rish Shah reveals Kamran’s true intentions in Ms Marvel

The actor said his character was coming from a genuine place, unlike in the comics where he's a villain.

Ms Marvel Wednesdays are no more — the show may have wrapped up but it left us with a lot of questions. Actor Rishi Shah answered a pressing one and cleared the confusion around his character Kamran, saying his intentions were always pure.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shah said, “As far as I’m aware, he was never duping her. He was never trying to play Kamala. And prior to some of the changes that were made later on in the script and during the reshoots, [his sincerity] was probably a bit clearer. But in my mind, that was always the case.”

In the series, Kamala (played by Iman Vellani) had a distant crush on Kamran and when they actually talked, the duo bonded instantly. Their shared culture seemed to provide a sense of belonging but then comes a plot twist and Kamran happens to be the son of the woman who was after Kamala’s great grandmother’s magical bangle. This seemed to invoke suspicion and filter out Kamran’s motives for befriending Kamala.

The Long Goodbye actor contradicted this and said the show may have taken inspiration from the comics but went off track with some of the plot points. Unlike the comics, Kamran is not a villain. “He’s actually coming from a very pure place and genuine place of just wanting to belong and feel at home, and he has this immediate connection with Kamala across multiple fields. And then, obviously, by the end of the show, he’s able to share the connection of the Noor by having these powers and newfound abilities,” he said.

The end of the show depicted Kamran looking to unleash his anger on the city and its people when his mother Najma’s powers were transferred to him but Shah cleared that up as well. “He feels slightly betrayed by the one person he trusted and leaned on, that being Kamala. She was there when his family died and he’s unable to handle that information and process it in the best manner. It’s not intentional — he’s just a lost boy who’s unable to handle the situation he’s been thrown into,” he explained.

The Do Revenge actor, like Vellani, is a big Marvel fan and really wanted to make this role happen. “I gunned hard to get that audition. I mean, my team obviously made it happen for me — and for them, it was just making a phone call — but I bugged them for years prior to somehow be involved within the Marvel universe,” he revealed.

Shah said he screen-tested with Vellani over Zoom and it was an instant match, “I have to say that we had a great chemistry read. From the get-go, it was just so easy with her.”

The actor was over the moon when he found out he had landed the role. “I was screaming from joy, I’m pretty sure I woke everybody up in my household. I was with all my closest people and everyone I love, so we all just celebrated together. It was a really sweet moment,” he shared.

If you’re missing Ms Marvel and her adventures, you’re not alone. But not to worry, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have hinted at a second season of the show. In an interview, they said it would be “great” to have a continuation of the series.
