Miss Grand Myanmar uses beauty pageant to speak up against her country's military

Please save Myanmar, she plead in her speech. "We need your urgent international help right now."

Beauty pageants are notorious for contestants seemingly caring about nothing but 'world peace' and 'complete harmony'. Miss Grand Myanmar Han Lay's response at the Miss Grand pageant in Thailand last week was also — you guessed it — about world peace. But along with world peace, she also took the opportunity to bring attention to her home country's ongoing democratic struggle and the atrocities committed by the state's military.

"Today in my country Myanmar ... there are so many people dying," she said. "Please help Myanmar. We need your urgent international help right now."

Just a week prior, Lay was on the bloody streets of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city — where she's also a student at a university — protesting against the military and for a democratic revolution. Early in February 2021, when the Aung San Suu Kyi-led National League for Democracy party was in power — having won in the November 2020 general elections — the military seized control of the state, using "election fraud" as an illegitimate excuse. Bizarrely enough, part of this coup d'état was caught on tape, in the background of an oblivious fitness instructor performing her routine.

“While I am standing here on this stage, more than 100 people have died. I am saddened for the loss of the lives of these people,” Lay said in her speech.

The 22-year-old was visibly shaken by the events that have unfolded in her country over the past two months, finding it difficult to control her emotions or keep her tears from rolling. She added, “The people in Myanmar have taken to the streets to fight for democracy. I too want to see democracy in the country. Please help Myanmar."

Having made her statement in Bangkok, Lay decided to remain there for the near future out of the fear of being arrested, killed, or both. Her fears are not irrational. Just last week, the government in Myanmar issued arrest warrants against 18 celebrities, social media influencers, and two journalists, under a law against all material "intended to cause a member of the armed forces to mutiny or disregard their duty". All of them had been openly critical of the government.

This is inspiring.. In Pakistan she would be labeled a traitor, anti government, anti army, an israeli/indian/western puppet agent demoralizing Pakistan. I guess even unstable and conflict ridden Myanmar is ahead of us. At least she is alive. Not killed, excuse me, dead from "natural causes" without investigation or autopsy report.

First of all she is not that attractive. Secondly the cries when her people are killed but didn't cry when the Rohingya were being brutalized. Of course my heart aches for her people and all humans for that sake but when Suu Kyi turned a blind eye and approved the atrocities against the Rohingya, punishment became due. The enemy of an enemy is a friend. In this instance the army, that is making Suu Kyi do back flips, is Rohingya's indirect friend. The citizens of Myanmar should not rise against the army since the violence hence ensued leads to civilian casualties. The taking up of power by the army is for a year. Can't they wait for a year if the army lives up to its promises and then stage demonstrations if promises aren't kept? Else more civilians are subjected to brutalities. Happy that Suu Kyi is suffering, hurt and sad because the common citizens are as well.

Army overtake or thinly veiled puppet show is only good in Pakistan. How many people are killed in Sindh GB and Baluchistan? At least 30000 missing and 40000 Rapes just in Baluchistan.

@Laila - I am pretty sure you dont know Pakistani History and well I am sure you are not even from Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto was staunch anti Military government and we made her prime minister, twice. Ayesha Siddiqa has been the strong critic and her book, "Military Inc." is easily available at Pakistani book stores. Iqbal Banu wore black saree and sang "Hum Dekhein Gay" with General Zia as chief guest of the event and there are many more stories like that. They protested and we progressed with it. yeah there are problems and things are getting better. Can you tell me where is Arundhati Roy these days?

@Sarcasm_ITCell the first 3 lines of your comments shows, why you are not worth engaging in a discussion with. This knee jerk first go to reaction of accusing your counterpart of being Indian or not Pakistani is pathetic and getting old. As a result I didn't bother reading the rest of your comment. Do grow up and learn basic debate prerequisites, tolerance and how to handle different views, then perhaps a discussion can be considered.
