What we saw at Aurat March 2020

What we saw at Aurat March 2020

March 8 is the one day in 365 where women take to the streets. They're definitely being heard.
Updated 10 Mar, 2020

It's International Women's Day and you know what that means. it's time for the Aurat March!

This one in 365 days - 366 during leap years - is when women unite and reclaim public space to raise their voices against injustice, misogyny and to question: patriarchy, what is this behaviour?

While the Aurat March is always met with backlash by those refusing to understand it, with many women receiving death threats and rape threats (because apparently that is the right way to behave with women asking for their rights), this time around there was a lot of vitriol surrounding the March much before it even commenced.

But the women refuse to be silenced out of fear; they've gone through too many decades of that.

Of course, there were women who wished to join the March but couldn't for many reasons. Perhaps it's their demanding jobs that they earned through, perhaps families refused to "allow" them, or maybe it was fear from all the threats.

To all of you, we say we see you and we got you.

Team Images just came back from all the Aurat Marches - Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi - and here's everything that went down.

First of all, shout-out to our security

Love our ladies, who always bring their poster A-game!

well done ladies and congratulations for marching for your God given rights. You made those clowns a loser who tried to stop the AURAT MARCH. This is Jinnah's Pakistan who believed in women empowerment. Congratulations to all. Pakistan zindabad.

All political agenda and vandetta. Earlier in India PM Modi propagation about triple divorce issue was resolved to get votes from Muslim women, BJP did got the votes & won, but same women beaten black & blue by BJP goons in north east Delhi, as they don’t need votes at the moment. The Aurat March has covert support from PPP & PML(N) per hidden agenda. Nothing going to happen.

Ego is your biggest enemy. Accepting mistake is not A Sign of defect or weakness, it a greatest but very difficult deed. The only person who benefits from it is you, yourself. Please LISTEN to women , we all are very naive to our freedom. We all grow up in a very suppressed and closed society run by bigots and self righteous people. Here is something for you to think about. Can we live and let others live in peace.

Awesome!!! The Aurat March (and Feminism) is so much more than a hashtag. Hilarious (and very telling) how the conservatives have latched onto one hashtag and tried to shift all the focus away from the (very) real issues highlighted by our domestic fem activists. This is a very strong riposte'. And some very good photojournalism, i might add. Love it!

"Ya'll even accessorised!" The only thing that makes me cringe a little when it comes to these kinds of movements is the silly Americanisms. What does "y'all" even mean? We're all Pakistanis, we're better than this. Nonetheless, great to see the women of Pakistan marching with courage and determination. You have my full support.

Congratulations and prayers for the Aurat March organisers and all those who attended. After 80 years of life I now today felt renewed hope for Pakistan, it's women and youth specially. Don't lose the initiative now please. This struggle for rights goes on.

Pass laws giving rights to ALL, not just men or women or minorities. And then implement the laws. It is as simple as this, no marches and no protests needed. Only implementation of laws will do the job!

How can this march be effective. Other than some awareness raised there could have been a charter or list of demands presented from a united platform to legislators and govt to pay attention to.

@myview He never said. Stop with the strawman arguments. "Mera jism meri marzi" questions why Pakistani society treats women as public property of men, and why woman is objectified and sexualized, and why she doesn't have the right to decide things for herself, why her consent doesn't matter, why she has no voice no votein her own life.

@Suman saurabh That is also for the betterment of the girl so she can live better life. Parents struggle a lot to even get thier daughters married. We should appraise that efforts of parents, rather than mocking them. Dont know where our imported culture going towards.
