Iqra Aziz's latest drama sparks outrage for making light of domestic violence

Drama Jhooti's trailer shows the actor faking being a victim of domestic abuse and people are not okay with it
Updated 06 Jan, 2020

After Meray Pass Tum Ho, ARY Digital has a new drama on its way which stars Iqra Aziz and Ahmed Ali Butt.

Drama Jhooti got two trailers and while the first one looks comparatively alright, showing Iqra as a resilient woman...

... the second trailer started making the rounds on social media as from the looks of it, Aziz is playing a woman who is pretending to play a victim of domestic abuse, leading us to wonder if this is what makes her the titular jhooti.

With domestic violence being a conversation not many are willing to speak on, it makes sense that this didn't settle with many. Such abuse is played down with claims that it's not as common nor big of a problem, while many make sure to comment on how it cannot be true.

Dramas like Jhooti - should it take the path the trailer implies it will take - play their part in trivialising the matter further and folks made sure to get on Twitter and say so.

They called out ARY for the idea

Making sure to point out the misogyny

And the stereotypes it enforces

Because abuse is very real

And should not be trivialised

PEMRA should introduce a stringent censorship before allowing any Film, Drama, Documentary and showing in TV channels. Also to ensure , there is no negative subject matter are in there that may effect the culture deterioration and disrespect the the society as a whole.

This is truly outrageous! Does ARY hate women? Why hasn't PEMRA taken any notice of it? You cannot take the severe social issue of domestic violence lightly. Women are killed on a daily basis because of it.

These dramas are playing a pivotal role in destroying the social fabric of our society. Instead of inculcating good values these dramas are highlighting negative elements. Every drama has either a love triangle, or they portray severe domestic violence in which the females are abused in every possible way. In my childhood dramas used to show strong women who had the ability to make big decisions. PEMRA needs to issue a strict guideline for the tv channels. They need to implement those guidelines as well.

Private channel drama scripts need to be scrutinized, and productions regulated for decency, enough of commercialization to make money at the cost of attenuating societal values!

Perhaps ARY is trying to portray that Pakistani women LIKE/LOVE to be beaten up.

We shouldn't solely lay the blame on the makers of this drama. The question is are we mature enough as viewers to take the correct message from this drama if there is one.

Dramas that focus on womens careers in all men centric sectors challenging , working side by side and or leading other women and men would be more appreciated. Pakistan needs alot more women with the right education and skills to improve its economy and break cultural norms.

Dramas should show issues womens face in the workplace, how disturbing the behaviour from some men in the workplace towards womens is and how it cannot be tolerated any longer. Sometimes tv can show society the mirror.

What’s with political correctness. It’s just a drama don’t be emotional on some character. Human have negativeness In them irrespective of there gender. I really believe Shah of Tik Tok fame have few flaws in her, any negative comments about her cannot account for women haters.

Its a drama, get over it. Even in the US not everything that is put on screens aligns with political correctness. Its a work of fiction purely for entertainment purposes, treat it as it is, there is no need to turn everything into a fight for a cause.

so this drama going by the teasers is the story of the woman who is forced and blackmailed by her family to marry a man she doesn't like and she fakes abuse to get out of a shadi she NEVER wanted and ary decides to sell is as bechara admi (who should have asked the woman if she wants to marry him) being abused how stupid are the PR teams to use sensation by demaeaming women rather thn actual track to sell this soap operas and yes stop calling tv dramas " drama" when they are not.
