Celebrities call out Ruby Anum for ageist remarks about Bushra Ansari

Actors including Zhalay Sarhadi, Mamya Shajaffar and Mishi Khan condemned her comments, calling them 'rude and disrespectful'.

Theatre actor Ruby Anum has landed herself in hot water after making a series of disrespectful and ageist remarks about veteran actor Bushra Ansari during an appearance on Sabih Sumair’s podcast.

When the host, a man, insisted she comment on several women in the entertainment industry, from Mehwish Hayat and Sajal Aly, to Hania Aamir, Bushra Ansari and Asma Abbas, Anum’s responses went from questionable to downright insulting.

She praised Aly for her beauty, saying she would have made her her “sister-in-law if her brothers weren’t already married” (because apparently Aly’s consent in this imaginary scenario is a given). She then criticised Hayat for her “botox” and called Aamir “the pride of Pakistan”.

But when it came to veteran stars, her tone shifted sharply. “Bushra Ansari is my favourite. I like her a lot — if I say so, it would be a lie. She should rest at this age,” Anum said, before adding that Ansari’s vlogs “don’t suit her”. She even suggested Ansari should “fear Allah” for working in her later years, remarking, “She is older than our mothers.”

Her comments didn’t stop there. While she softened her stance on Ansari’s sister, Asma Abbas, she still managed to undermine her by questioning why she continues to act and even, shockingly enough, shop for clothes and shoes. Because how dare a woman care for herself after a certain age, right?

To make matters worse, Anum capped off her statements by suggesting Ansari wasn’t ‘beautiful’ enough to justify staying in the limelight. As if appearance determines an artist’s right to create and work.

Unsurprisingly, her remarks triggered a swift wave of backlash from fellow celebrities.

Actor Zhalay Sarhadi called her out, saying, “Incredibly out of line, intrusive, rude and disrespectful. Why must such people spew needless opinions? To get viral? Is that it? Such a disgrace.”

Mamya Shajaffar wrote, “Breaks my heart how women always bring other women down.”

Ghana Ali also weighed in, adding simply, “Ok, I found her extremely rude, period!”

Mishi Khan shared a detailed video response on Instagram, expressing disappointment: “Her comments were below the belt. I was so disappointed. It’s entirely Bushra Ansari’s call that she’s acting and vlogging at whatever age she is; she has, after all, maintained herself so well, MashaAllah. But using such language, and then saying you like her… that’s not okay.”

She added, “You said yourself that Asma Abbas calls you to her show and gives you so much respect and protocol. You complimented her, too and then degraded [her]. What is this behaviour? You have a problem with them vlogging, you can start too. If you’re not interested and someone else is, someone else is interested in keeping themself fit or staying up to date, what is your issue?”

At the end of the day, the real question is why actors like Anum feel the need to police other women’s appearances and choices in the first place.

In an industry (and world) already saturated with misogyny, ageism and arbitrary beauty standards, piling on only makes it worse. If anything, women in entertainment should be uplifting each other, not parroting the same tired narratives that have been used to silence and sideline them for decades.

After reading this Article on woes of women (As a Man) I can safely say that the real enemy of a woman is not a man but another.......woman? Voila!

As visible in the heading photo, Bushra Ansari looks much more presentable than Ruby Anum from any angle. Viewers on media hardly know the biography of the characters they watch on the screens. They only buy those artists, who appeal to them in their acts and presentations. All other talks and discussions are irrelevant and only grudge talks.

Sabih Sumair is neither a journalist, trained or professional anchor. He is just a an idle/Farigh male behaving like a girl while stirring in the pot that is gossip, self-righteous moral superiority. He looks up to misogynists like Khalilul Rehman. He is just a mindless YouTuber with no real job. Why was he insisting she comment on several other women? Why doesn't he ask his male guests the same? Because he does not know how to interview people. He just wants attention, likes and views. Why are the women not clever enough to see through this and simply smile, and say "next question", or get up and leave?

It is a disturbing indictment of contemporary society that some individuals not only debase others through body shaming and ageism but also exhibit pride in doing so, especially when it results in viral attention. Such conduct is unequivocally lamentable

Truth is, if you can't see the problem with Nargis and Deedar's dances and don't find them vulgar and pornographic ( under lying element ) then either you are part of them or have personal agenda against those who are speaking out.

After commenting I went and watched this portion of the "interview" and googled her name. Watched some snippets of YouTube videos with her. Omg. This woman is close to 60 herself and doesn't exactly carry herself like a lady, nor is her profession modest, and she has a problem with Ansari or older/old women being active and working? Why? Ageing doest mean you stop living and working. Being active is a sign of good health and privilege. Jist don't watch this stuff. Don't give them ratings and views.

@Rancho "Now"? No, I think she has been an actor for a while. According to Google she has done a few dramas by now. Considering even most of our big star actors the standards have always been low. At least she is not a nepo baby like half our actors.

Whoever this person is sounds incredibly intelligent and highly educated. I suspect she was educated at Cambridge in cultural anthropology with advanced degrees from Yale. Is s/he a Professor at LUMS or something? We really need more sophisticated thoughtful people like this in our society. Hats off to him/her/it.

Images, Mmmmm what do you mean by "(Sajal) Aly's consent" being given for marriage? Consent? That too of a.....female? Surely you miswrote?? This is Pakistan. We don't need silly imported western liberal feminist family system destroying womens empowerment nonsense like 'female consent'. Kindly refrain from putting such ideas into our females heads. Otherwise we (yes, all 250 million of us) will treat you like we do the handful of women marchers. This is Pakistan. Aurat ki marzi nahi chalay gi. Larki ki shaadi/zindagi/jism/dil/dimaagh/khuwaab/khuwaishaat, lekin family, mard (koi bi ho), Ruby Anam or society ki marzi. Bus!

@Jamil Soomro In context of Pakistan it's predominantly males or rather misogyny who are the real enemy of women. But there is no denying many women have internalised misogyny and this operate the structural framework designed and implemented by males. So females become complicit and accomplices. That doesn't change that it is males who rape throw acid, honor kill, main, brutalize, beat up, assault females and take away their rights. Men are supposed to be leaders and protectors. This is lacking in Pakistan and instead they have become oppressors born out of patriarchy and superiority complex, gender and moral double standards with zero accountability Ruby Anum is the product of a misogynistic society. Similar to mother's, sisters and wives who don't hold their males responsible but excuse/justify their behaviour as "boys will be boys".
