Aamir Liaquat's latest tweets prove that casual sexism is thriving in Naya Pakistan

Aamir Liaquat's latest tweets prove that casual sexism is thriving in Naya Pakistan

Liaquat made a jibe at a rival politician at Sherry Rehman's expense and Twitter is not having it
Updated 02 Aug, 2018

There's a new controversy on Twitter and it involves infamous TV host Amir Liaquat.

Yesterday, PTI MNA Aamir Liaquat posted a photo of senator Sherry Rehman, MMA spokesperson Owais Noorani and former PM Yousuf Raza Gilani with a caption referring to some suggestive Bollywood lyrics.

Following backlash on Twitter, Liaquat deleted his tweet and issued an 'apology' explaining that he meant to target Noorani, not Sherry Rehman.

Audiences have come to expect vulgarity from Aamir Liaquat, the TV entertainer, but as an MNA, he has to meet higher standards of behaviour. For Liaquat to not realise in the first place that it's inappropriate to make a jibe at a rival politician at Sherry Rehman's expense is a clear indication of his casual sexism. And it's also worrying that he doesn't understand that sexism is a no-go even if your intention is to insult a man with it.

So Liaquat's tweets are not only an alarming reminder of his derogatory attitude towards women, but also underscore the need for the newly elected PTI to prove that there is no room for casual misogyny in the Parliament of Naya Pakistan.

Since yesterday, it appears that Shireen Mazari is the only PTI leader to have called him out for his behaviour:

And Twitter is making sure that PTI knows the #InternetDoesntForget.

Yeah, he's not sexist. And neither is Donald Trump or Harvey Weinstein! Such cheap publicity thrill rides only speak of your lack of imagination, unsophisticated life and impulsiveness. Not a good formula for a promsing career as an MNA when you have to work with reps of all stripes, persuassions and affiliations. Also shows how badly your show-biz career must be going, if you have to resort to vulgar remarks to draw attention to your self!??

Horrible, oily little man. Even his attempt at an apology was tone deaf, suggesting that he deleted his tweet because it "might look bad" for Rehman. No, sweetheart, it doesn't look bad for her, it just looks bad for you - and confirms to the world what a petty, insecure man-child you actually are. Hasan

He is liked by majority of Pakistani and especially people of Karachi. As long his rating is going up he will do same things. That is why elected MNA and famous TV personality. So people who don't like him who are in minority should change people mind not him.

Such a foul language doesn't suit his position. Previously he has humiliated many individuals on t.v programs as well. He has to be cautious in his statements or else he can be a problem for the captain.

Is it sexist against Noorani or Sherry sahiba ? whatever it is hilarious lighthearted joke , we need to mentally grow up to laugh over such high spirited behaviour. I am often jealous of Amir Liaquat for his high intelligence 'shenaniganism'

People like him will be the 'downfall' of a very decent party and it's leaders. Be very cautious and get rid of him as soon as possible.

This is sickening. ALSO embarrassing that PTI has such an obviously Hippocrat person in their fold. IK and top team should take serious notice of such tweets and msgs by anyone in PTI. Lets not forget, Women power & appeal is what got PTI where it is today!

@Shakir Baakza Looks to me they consider him a small fish and pay not much attention to him. However, these juveniles can be dangerous in future and should be rid off.
