Audiences at the Sundance Film Festival cried tears of laughter at The Big Sick which not surprisingly got snatched up by Amazon for a reported $12 million — and now the unique rom-com's first trailer is here!

The story might have been hard to swallow if it weren’t essentially true; The three minute trailer chronicles Kumail Nanjiani's courtship with his wife, Emily V. Gordon. The two have written the script together recounting their own experiences dating and the obstacles that followed in the form of Nanjiani's family's desire to have him enter into an arranged marriage with a Pakistani girl.

They hit a further snag when she abruptly slipped into a coma.

Ray Romano and Holly Hunter star as Emily’s father and mother. While the trio’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, they begin to bond over their shared concern for Emily.

“We were not consciously trying to make a political statement, but we live in a time now where a brown man falling in love with a white girl is inherently a political statement,” Nanjiani told Entertainment Weekly.

The Big Sick is expected to be a big word-of-mouth hit when it hits theaters in limited release on June 23 and gets a wider opening on July 14. It is directed by Michael Showalter and produced by Judd Apatow and Barry Mendel.

Looks a good movie, good old fashion rom-com. The Pakistani touch would make it a bit more interesting.

I wonder what people's reactions would be if the sexes were reversed. If we had a Pakistani girl dating a white guy, he goes into a coma and her parents were trying to arrange a marriage for her with a Pakistani guy. I suppose all is fair in love and war if you are a man from Pakistan.
