Spiderman: No Way Home has been shattering records since its release in Dec 2021 — within a month it swung to the sixth-highest grossing movie in history with $1.69 billion globally — and two months down the road, it has climbed the list to reach number three on the biggest US domestic box office hits of all time. The superhero blockbuster has surpassed Avatar, landing itself right next to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame.

The Sony and Marvel collaboration film ended up with a domestic total of $761 million on Feb 14. Avatar earned $760.5 million.

Globally, however, Avatar remains on top the chart of top-grossing films worldwide after earning $2.84 billion over the course of its lifetime. Avengers: Endgame ranks in second place, earning $2.79 billion. No Way Home remains number six on the list, grossing a global total of $1.8 billion internationally.

This is still a major milestone for the film as it soared to such heights despite not having been played in theatres in China, which is the world’s biggest box office market.

The movie stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei. The plot follows the reveal of Spiderman's identity for the first time in the franchise's cinematic history, "bringing his superhero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk." It features a collaboration with Doctor Strange to "help to restore his secret" which opens up a portal in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spiderman in any universe.

No Way Home also became the first pandemic-era movie to smash the $1-billion milestone globally. Sony's comic book epic has eclipsed that milestone in a near-record 12 days, tying with 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the third fastest film to reach the billion dollar benchmark. Only 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame were quicker, smashing the coveted tally in 11 and five days respectively.
