Scene: Your bed, Monday morning.
You wake up and roll over in bed, reaching blearily for your cell phone. Your fingers unconsciously bring up Twitter. You grab the glass of water on your bedside table and take a sip as you scroll through your feed. All is well until you scroll to the third hashtag trending in Pakistan: #ArmyConfessionTime.
Cue: spit take
Time stands still. A coup? A secret alliance? A revolution? Nope, it's just the BTS ARMY.
Is this scene familiar? It should be, given how much BTS trends on Pakistani Twitter these days.
The mixup is understandable, but BTS's ARMY stands for Adorable Representative MC for Youth. The Pakistan Army stands for... well the Army. Two very different things.
Some people argue that it's the most powerful army in the world.
And with over 20 million members, they might not be wrong. BTS is currently the biggest boyband in the world and their fans (ARMY) are both fiercely protective of them and very proactive. That means they do things like matching a $1 million donation made by the band to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The seven-member boyband is based out of South Korea and has topped the Billboard charts and earned a Grammy nomination, making them the first Koreans to do so. They also recently performed at the Grammys, in another first.
The whole world knows who BTS is but the hashtag still stumped Pakistan.
Rapper and comedian Ali Gul Pir was expecting something very different when he clicked on it.
So was Ahmer Naqvi (AKA Karachi Khatmal).
In fact, quite a few people were confused.
Including this person, who thought she would use it to make some very different confessions.
The #ArmyConfessionTime hashtag is actually being used by BTS fans around the world to laugh about some of their earlier misconceptions about the band.
