Original animator of The Lion King calls the live-action remake cheap

“It’s sort of sad that the stockholder is now in the room deciding what movies get made," shared David Stephan

While Disney's live-action reboot of The Lion King has been roaring at the box office, critics and audiences have had mixed reviews.

The film also failed to impress one of the original animator's of the 1994 classic, David Stephan who called it "cheap".

In an interview with HuffPost, he said, “If you polled the crew of the original Lion King, most of them would say, ‘Why? Did you really have to do that?’ It kind of hurts.”

He added, “It’s sort of sad that the stockholder is now in the room deciding what movies get made. Disney’s now taken the cover off, and it’s now in your face: ‘Yeah, we just want to make money.’ That’s disappointing as an artist, from a studio that was founded on originality and art.”

Stephan also called the voice performances by the cast full of stars like Donald Grover and Beyonce "weak and wooden".

Dave Bossert, who did visuals for the classic also thought otherwise: “I love the fact that they kept James Earl Jones from the original as Mufasa. That was terrific. It’s a sort of homage to the original film. I thought the voice characterizations were terrific across the board. There wasn’t anything that struck me as being odd at all. I particularly liked John Oliver as Zazu and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa.”

Another animator, who worked on the original, Dave Bossert was a little more positive: “Visually, it’s stunning. In some instances, it’s a shot-by-shot version of the original animated film, and that didn’t bother me at all because I think the filmmakers were staying faithful to the original property. The faithfulness to the original animated film certainly endears it to the audience, without question.”

Remakes are only the testimony of the greatness of the original. Have we not seen the remakes of the old film Devdas? Do they not create a strong will to dig the archives and see the real original?

Yeah, the lion king reboot failed to create the same impact on us.It lacks many important things a film needs to have.I totally agree with David Stephan that some voiceovers were weak and this film was not upto the mark'The Lion King 'has set before.

I watched it yesterday. As someone who grew up watching the original, I can understand why this one is being panned. Its not bad, but it is a lot more darker and more foreboding than the original.

A studio that was founded on originality and art? Did he really say that? Most disney movies are adaptations and reimaginations of old novels and books. And wasn't the lion king a blatant rip off of a japanese cartoon? So much so that they waited for the creator of the japanese cartoon die and then begin production on the lion king?

The new Lion King is fabulous. I watched the original one with my kids some 20 times 20 years ago. The visual effect of Live Lions moving the stampede all was very thrilling

It may be that the entertainment industry has been running out of ideas. I've often wondered what purpose a remake of a film really serves when all too often the original version is far superior and can still be viewed.

I've been to the movies to watch The Lion King twice. I loved it. It's fantastic they bought back James Earl Jones. I don't think any other could have done the voice of Mufasa justice. I had goosebumps and lump in my throat from the very beginning opening scene and song

My children loved it but I and my husband were really not impressed. A remake should be better than original otherwise it is a failure. If this would be the original film, I would be in awe but this is not and I was in awe before watching the original. The soundtrack, the light, the effects, I think everything was more cohesive in original. Yes, Pumbaa was definitely better in this one.

"The film also failed to impress one of the original animator's of the 1994 classic, David Stephan who called it "cheap".'" David is right, other than high resolution graphics, there is not much to see in the move in terms of story, direction, editing, and creativity!
