Not okay to joke about people's insecurities: Hania Aamir responds to trolls after brave acne post

While the industry applauded her, some like Yasir Hussain made jokes about her post about embracing imperfect skin
Updated 24 Feb, 2020

Parwaaz Hai Junoon actor Hania Aamir won the admiration of fans and industry peers on Sunday when she took to Instagram to share her experience of coming to terms with her 'imperfect' skin.

Sharing photos of her acne, she asked, "Why is my skin defining me? Who has made these beauty standards that we always feel the need to match? [...] I know that the idea of being “perfect” is appealing to majority but you don’t need to be an airbrushed flawless image to feel beautiful."

The response to her honesty was tremendous with the post garnering over 120,000 likes and thousands of comments. Several celebrities like Meesha Shafi and Syra Shahroz applauded her bravery to challenge beauty ideals when her success depends on conforming to them.

However, some of her industry peers responded with flippancy, like actor Yasir Hussain who marred the much-needed conversation with his irreverent and unnecessary two cents.

When asked to describe Hania in one word during an #AMA session on Instagram last night, he chose to respond with: "Daanedar" (or pock marked).

Hania initially brushed his comment off, saying, "Forgive my friend. He's become prone to making inappropriate jokes."

Later, however, she addressed the mean spiritedness behind the joke, saying: "It's high time that people realise that it's not okay to make jokes out of people's insecurities. Humour is great but be careful with it. Don't try and act cool about making someone feel bad about what they might consider a flaw. It's disrespect. Not funny. I'm not laughing. Noone is."

We're glad Hania called the trolls out. The facade provided to us by the internet shouldn't embolden us to spew insensitive comments on social media without remorse.

Which is what Yasir appears to be doing, as he responds to Hania's comment with more flippancy:

Honestly, Yasir Hussain needs to stop acting like a two-year old kid. You are a celebrity and should be more responsible about what you say. Good on Hania to respond to it directly.

Well, she's very insecure, which is why she took the offense. This also means that she made her original post, just to get the likes and aww comments.
