Did Bollywood bring its A-game to the Met Gala?
Last night was the Met Gala, fashion's most over the top, wackiest night.
Met Gala style is known to be outrageous; in the past celebs have dressed their wildest -- but how did our Bolly faves, Priyanka and Deepika fare on the red carpet?
Also in attendance was Isha Ambani who may as well be part of that club. Her wedding was basically a Bollywood fever dream so we're going to be breaking down her look too.
This year's theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” which has nothing to do with camping. It's a nod to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on Camp which begins by defining the term as “its love of the unnatural, of artifice and exaggeration.” Noting that with camp, it’s not about talking in “terms of beauty” but rather “in terms of the degree of artifice, of stylization.”
Did they push the boundaries on the red carpet and stay true to the theme? Take a look at what we thought about their individual looks:
Deepika Padukone
We were disappointed. The actress wore a custom pink lurex Jacquard Zac Posen gown and coupled it with an even bigger hairdo and some baubles. According to reports, Posen enlisted the help of engineers to craft more than 400 3D-printed embroidery pieces for Padukone’s outfit for the night.
The pretty in pink look is SO overdone and it's the Met for crying out loud. We know she could've brought more drama than just vampy makeup. Plus, she always plays it too safe on the Gala carpet. It's the one night you're allowed to go all out and no one's going to bash you for being OTT.
Priyanka Chopra
We'll hand PC one thing: she always commits to the theme. Even if it doesn't always look good, she gets a B+ for effort. You can tell she put time and effort into this one. Or at least her glam squad did.
She did something different with her hair, pairing it with silver brows and a raspberry pout with matching eyeshadow. A silver Dior Haute couture gown topped off with a crown for for a queen! She almost looked like a fairy Godmother didn't she?
Isha Ambani
Just by the way, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone weren't the only Indians at the Met Gala. Also in attendance was Isha Ambani making her second outing at the Met Gala. Her lilac ook was sweet but nothing to write home about. She wore a fairly forgettable Prabal Gurung tulle v-neck ballgown with embroidered crystal and ostrich feathers.
We liked some of the details though like the sunburst pleating inserts and sculptural shoulder but we were hoping for more oomph.
