Emma Watson wins first genderless award at this year's MTV Movie & TV Awards

The actress picked up the accolade for playing Belle in the live-action re-telling of Beauty and the Beast

On Sunday night, Emma Watson became the first person to win the MTV Movie & TV Awards' new gender-neutral Best Actor in a Movie category.

Watson bagged the accolade for her performance as Bella in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.

Of course the Harry Potter star was equipped with an emotional speech to go with it.

"The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience,” she said.

This year, MTV made all their award categories genderless to make them more inclusive and Watson was quick to give them credit for that.

She added: "MTV's move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone. But to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories. Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits. This is very meaningful to me"

The awards show also added a genderless best actor category for television, which was won by 13-year-old Millie Bobby Brown for her popular character Eleven in Stranger Things.

That being said, the MTV Movie & TV Awards isn't the first event to introduce gender-neutral categories; the Grammy Awards scrapped male and female prizes in 2011.

Like most things Emma does, this left us feeling inspired too. More power to you, girlfriend!

They are killing equality rights. What's genderless awards? Are we poised for genderless Olympics games? Imagine mixed-doubles in Wimbledon tennis becoming mixed-genderless doubles. In the end women will all be sitting home 'manning' the kitchens. This modern world is embracing a genderless society to appease men only.

Can't understand the logic behind scrapping the gender based awards. Taking the cue, we should abolish it from the sports also.

Either something has gone seriously wrong in the brain of men and women of the western societies or it must be a black comedy. Gender neutral awards??? In a serious note, if these award has been given to a male actor, the female creatures would have exploded unison chanting Sexism. Drugged world is what we are living in now, seriously.
