How to feast in Karachi on a Rs 1,000 budget

Karachi is home to foodies but what do you do when you're on a budget but want to binge?

Dawn decided to take on the challenge of eating out all day within a budget of Rs1000. And just so you know, we wanted to stuff our faces!

From the basic brekki, lunch, dinner to snacks and desserts, we made sure that our foodventure doesn't cost us a rupee over Rs1000.

And guess what? We still managed to save Rs2! How bout a Softmint to end the day?

Rs. 1,000 per day/person is quite an amount in Pakistan..!!

Comes upto 30,000 in a month which is gross salary to many.

QZikle Apr 05, 2017 11:15am

How many working people in Karachi afford Rs 1000 meal?

Aslam Apr 05, 2017 11:18am

You can even save one's live in that amount!!

m@k Apr 05, 2017 11:24am

you did an awesome job.... team DAWN

also impressed by the girl's appetite... :)

Alexey Apr 05, 2017 11:46am

I don't think anyone can eat all that in one day(Kudos to her ;)). But i think this video is great for visitors.

bkt Apr 05, 2017 11:55am

On Rs1,000 a day it is quite possible to feast two people in some style. I think you need to get more real. A challenge should be how to feast on Rs200 would be more practical and it can also be done.

Feroz Apr 05, 2017 12:00pm

Decent stuff for the amount spent.

shoaib Apr 05, 2017 12:10pm

1000 Rs is a luxury in Pakistan. please do some article on best way to spend 500 for two person on a food in Karachi.

hint: start with food center biryani.....

Yourstruly Apr 05, 2017 12:15pm

Rs. 90 for haleem with naan, and 150 for coconut water? :)

zebswati Apr 05, 2017 12:38pm

VERY NICE , iam planning to visit Karachi in August for three days good guide , with it comes to Karachi, I only have three points SEA, Nihari and Biryani !

Ashish Apr 05, 2017 12:40pm

Madam, it is so unhealthy to eat out so much - that too in one day! Some of the places did not look very hygienic as well - in terms of the cooking ingredients!

saifullah mahsud Apr 05, 2017 12:52pm

Thats a lot of eating for one day.

Kinza Haider Apr 05, 2017 01:00pm

She forgot to mention the diarrhea one can suffer after eating all these things in one day!

ABE Apr 05, 2017 01:04pm

You could very well have Rs 1000 to enjoy a meal. But you may not have enough to pay some security guards to accompany you to enjoy your meal in Karachi's lawless environs. Sad, if you have to hire private security guards for your family to simply go out for a meal.

Falcon1 Apr 05, 2017 01:16pm

Of all the places visited in this video, if you ever witnessed how the food is prepared under unhygienic conditions, you may think twice before eating any...

IMan Apr 05, 2017 01:34pm

Barring the lunch and perhaps coconut water, all that she ate were junk. Starting the day with an oily parantha and an oily omelette is a absolute no for many . Worldwide people are deviating from their social/local food to more healthy alternatives

Mahmood Apr 05, 2017 01:34pm

All the places represented in this video essentially are 'street food' vendors. Which hardly surprises me will feed an entire family for a day. Anywhere in the Third world, be it Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Cairo, you could manage to feed yourself for mere $10 a day. But the quality will vary.

Nabeel Apr 05, 2017 02:23pm

What about the travelling expenses...?

Hassan (Karachi) Apr 05, 2017 02:24pm

@akber_eh This isn't mean't to be standard daily food, for that nothing is cheaper than cooking at home. Its more of a weekend food splurge in which you are willing to spend Rs 1000 to eat the best food you can find in Karachi.

سے Shaam (Hanafi) Apr 05, 2017 02:36pm

If it's eating that you do all day, better to go to "10" diff Dhabas @ Rs100/- each, spend an hour at each spot. Wallah 10 hours gone, go for an "8" hours sleep and about "2" hours for ablutions, 24-hours finished. Repeat it the next day and the following days...Happy Mealing :)

سے Shaam (Hanafi) Apr 05, 2017 02:38pm

Who pays for her transportation?

Shahir YAR Apr 05, 2017 02:57pm

How can some one take so much food in in one day.

Farrukh Arshad Apr 05, 2017 03:04pm

How hygienic was all that stuff ? You should promote healthy eating

riz Apr 05, 2017 03:10pm

arry wah nice amazing concept,, plz do the same for Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, pindi, failsalabad, Hyderabad as well plz promote local food in other cities as well,, amazing video,,

riz Apr 05, 2017 03:10pm

@QZikle see the video first, its not for a meal but whole day,,

riz Apr 05, 2017 03:12pm

@bkt yes agree, the meals I saw in video is enough for two except the chia,,, the cup looks big can share two,, I guess its very much possible that in Rs1000 two guys can have foody fun

riz Apr 05, 2017 03:14pm

@Falcon1 oohhh dear, than plz don't visit these places and NEVER try to eat as well,, you seems K2 of negativity,, keep it up you have to break the record of Mount Everest,

KHALID Apr 05, 2017 03:14pm

What about cost of transportation........they missed on it....I guess

Tootrue Apr 05, 2017 04:17pm

And food poisoning thrown in at no extra cost.

karmicgal Apr 05, 2017 06:14pm

Coconut water for 150 rs! In India it costs 30Rs. Everything seems way too expensive considering these joints are not premium eateries.

WM Toronto Apr 05, 2017 06:50pm

Spending Rs.1000 in one day on food is a luxury in Pakistan. Challenge would be, if someone can eat one day's food in under Rs. 100, a lot of people in Karachi, do that everyday.

Shah Apr 05, 2017 07:00pm

How about you sell your laptop/smartphone on which you typed and help that 30k per month guy?

hasanin Apr 05, 2017 07:51pm

we can eat this all for thousand form cheap outlets.... 1000 rupees are nothin in shahi shanawari... haheen shanawari .. blochisan sigiii and many other sites...... check the water quality where you are having all this???

Ahmad Khan Apr 05, 2017 08:22pm

I am missing Karachi even more after this video

Ali Vazir Apr 05, 2017 11:43pm

Though even this Rs 1,000 is expensive for majority of Pakistanis. But who cares about majority. Dear Dawn-Images, can you please send the write-up of this video. Not everybody can watch the video with poor internet connection.

ss Apr 06, 2017 01:44am

For about $10-12 you can have breakfast, lunch & dinner and maybe ice cream ie @ fast food, in America. Rs1000 in Pakistan is a lot money to spend on food a day and not a challenge.

Princess_of_DHUMP Apr 06, 2017 05:41am

for 1000 I can eat 3 times a day for 5 days!

Rev. Eldrick lal Apr 06, 2017 09:48am

Our cusinine is really delicious but hygiene isn't considered much in these restaurants. $ 2.00 limca drink and so many flies around.

Nidhu Apr 06, 2017 02:21pm

@akber_eh hahaha that's exactly what I was thinking!!

Vishal Apr 06, 2017 03:14pm

In Jalandhar we are getting unlimited buffet B'fast = Rs.80/-, Lunch and Dinner = Rs. 110/- (Vegetarian only). Also in a good quality 3-4* hotel Unlimited Non Veg Buffet for Rs. 250/- (Total 36 items including sweet dishes). I think Rs. 1000/- per day is too high for a middle class man.

Adi viccaji Apr 06, 2017 09:29pm

Great food at low cost outlets in Karachi.

Shah Apr 06, 2017 10:14pm

Some of the places were not hygienic. For example would you drink juice from a roadside vendor when you are not sure of the quality of water???

Shah Apr 06, 2017 10:16pm

@Vishal At the end of day hygene and quality of what you are eating matters.

sameer Apr 08, 2017 10:22am

@WM Toronto Not possible to eat one day food in 100 in Karachi even tea cup is for 20 and roti avg price is 8 infect lots of people skip there meals (out of breakfast , lunch , dinner) and substitute proper meal with like samosa / roasted peas etc ...

Alexa Apr 09, 2017 07:49am

Silly video, revealing the poverty, child labour and unhygienic conditions that prevail in our country.
