Three sentenced to 7 years in jail in Khalilur Rehman Qamar honeytrap, kidnapping case
Three people have been sentenced to seven years in jail for their involvement in honey trapping and kidnapping playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar.
Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Arshad Javed announced the verdict on Monday, acquitting other suspects in the case. Amna Urooj, Mamnoon Haider and Zeeshan have been handed seven-year jail sentences.
Qamar, a seasoned drama writer, was abducted after being lured to a woman’s house in Lahore at 4:40am on July 15, 2024. The writer held a press conference days after the incident to apprise the media of the situation.
According to the FIR registered under sections of kidnapping and terrorism at the Sundar Police Station in Lahore on July 21, Qamar received a phone call from an unknown number close to midnight. The caller, who identified herself as Amna Urooj, claimed to be a fan of Qamar and expressed a desire to collaborate with him on a TV drama.
Qamar, known for his popular dramas like Meray Paas Tum Ho and Pyarey Afzal, agreed to meet her. He reached the given location at approximately 4:40am, where Urooj welcomed him into her house. However, soon after he sat down, there was a knock on the door, and around seven armed men entered the room. The men conducted a body search, seizing Rs60,000, an iPhone 11, a Bank Al-Habib ATM card, and Qamar’s national identity card.
The FIR said the abductors withdrew over Rs200,000 from a separate bank account belonging to Qamar. The kidnappers allegedly told him that they had orders to kill him, demanding a ransom of Rs10 million.
In August, the ATC began trying 11 suspects in the case. During the course of the trial, 17 witnesses appeared in court, including Qamar, his friend, police officers and bank staff.
