Barbie soars at the box office with $150m weekend prediction while Oppenheimer trails with $75m
This Barbienheimer weekend is shaping up to be quite a showdown between Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The movies are poles apart, both in their target audiences and content, but are being pitted against each other at the box office and Barbie is coming out on top. Both movies released globally on July 21.
Barbie is about the Mattel doll of the same name finding her way into the real world from Barbie Land. It stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Oppenheimer is about American theoretical physicist JR Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb.
According to Deadline, Barbie eyed $68 million to $70m at the box office on its opening day and is shaping up to be the best opening of the year with $150m at 4,243 theatres. Some estimates place Barbie’s weekend earnings higher — at between $165 and $170m.
Oppenheimer headed for a $32m payday on its opening day and a three-day of $75m at 3,610 theatres.
In terms of previews, Barbie has collected the best previews of the entirety of 2023 with $22.3m. Oppenheimer collected $10.5m in previews.
