Zimbabwe’s T20 win against Pakistan proves one thing — the curse of the Bean is real

The Zimbabwean president and Pakistani PM engaged in friendly banter as the former asked for the real Mr Bean next time.

Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe in their T20 World Cup match on Thursday by a single run — and might we say that the activation of the curse of Pak Bean was at play?

What was considered to be an otherwise easy win, especially compared to the blood rush of a match with India on Sunday, turned into another loss. Zimbabweans had warned us of the longstanding grudge that was ready to latch onto our cricketers on field and they were not joking. We sent them Pak Bean (Asif Mohammad, a Mr Bean look-alike) instead of Rowan Atkinson (the actual Mr Bean) one distant night six years ago. But they take their Beans very seriously.

President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa joined in on the fun, asking for the real Mr Bean next time. “What a win for Zimbabwe! Congratulations to the Chevrons. Next time, send the real Mr Bean,” he tweeted.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shot back in good humour: “We may not have the real Mr Bean, but we have real cricketing spirit.. And we Pakistanis have a funny habit of bouncing back. Mr President: Congratulations. Your team played really well today.”

It was the curse of a Bean, Malala.

Especially if they’re your opponents in a sporting competition.

On a side note.

We know why we lost.

We hope the curse has been lifted now.

Congratulations to Zimbabwe on the win! We hope the real Mr Bean finds his way to you.

When the chips were down, Pakistan could not score the crucial 2 runs against Zimbabwe, while India did manage to score thar much needed single run against Pakistan. Consolations Pakistan.

It seems we don't treat Cricket as sport but rivalry filled with hate n abuses. We must have Grace to accept the victory n defeat in gentle way. Let the Gentleman Game be Gentle n Appreciative.

Reality is Pakistani batsmen have been playing at home or dubai on flat pitches and against mostly minnow teams or B teams over covid, creating a false sense of ‘successes’. They got foundout in seaming swinging bouncing conditions. Fact is Pakistani batsmen apart from Babar lack skill, thats why they struggle in longer formats of the game!

I don't know about the curse of Mr. Bean but knows Shahid Afridy has done wonders for the cricket of our country but unfortunately since then everyone try to copy him and our batting talent has got totally dry. We are lucky to survive many close matches against minnows like Namibia, Netherlands, Bangla Desh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe ( lost few). Our bowling talent win many matches for us but every day is not Sunday. Many a times our bowling performance was neutralized due to poor performance of batting. Selectors selected best a available side but batting talent has its limitations and are exposed.

Pakistani cricket reflects its society. It's a society that wants instant results - Pakistanis do not know how to put in the hard yards. They're forever looking for a knight in shining armor to come and save them. Putting in decades of effort and investment that results in solid institutions is not something they can comprehend. When it comes to influence in geopolitics they think all that is missing is "lobbying" not competence, a stable government, behaving like a responsible state or a strong economy. When it comes to industry, they think the world should come and invest in Pakistan, never mind the non-existent skilled labor or experienced workforce which is built over decades of investment in education and infrastructure. When it comes to cricket, they think, like Shahid Afridi, if they swing their bat 10 times, it may connect 5. Technique, timing, hard yards - alien concepts.
