Netizens love the ‘sportsmanship’ shown by Salman Naeem as he hugged Zain Qureshi, accepted PP-217 defeat gracefully

Pakistani Twitter thinks the PML-N and PTI representatives set an example for how politicians should engage with one another.

Elections are always a charged time that have politicians on edge with anticipation but PML-N’s Salman Naeem and PTI’s Zain Qureshi proved you can take the win and loss with grace and respect for one another. Their moment was caught on camera and netizens are appreciating the show of good “sportsmanship”.

The contest for Multan’s PP-217 constituency was neck and neck — Qureshi won the seat with 46,963 votes while the runner-up Naeem ended up with 40,104 votes.

The PTI candidate retweeted the moment following the announcement of results. It showed the two competitors in the same room as Naeem got up and hugged Qureshi, shaking his hand and congratulating him on the win. The latter thanked him and the two had a little chat, smiling all the while, before Naeem headed out.

The exchange was celebrated by netizens who regarded it as the ideal way of dealing with a competitor. They praised the show of sportsmanship and said the duo had set an example for how politicians need to interact with one another.

“All politicians must learn and practice this,” they said.

They also liked the fact that the two politicians waited for the results together.

Twitter users appreciated the “maturity of character” coming from the “two young future leaders of Pakistan”.

“Wins and losses are part of life” but respect should be a constant.

Congratulations to Qureshi and best wishes to Naeem!

Great move and excellent news. In fact, difference of opinion, ideology, politics and thoughts must not become a personality clash anywhere in the world including the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

I highly doubt if a PTI candidate congratulated a victor upon their defeat like this that the PTI Trolls would let the person off the hook at all. What would he be? Traitor? Turncoat? Sellout? Choices, choices, right?

There is no sportsmanship. Salman Naeem defeated Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the same constituency in 2018 as an independent candidate and then joined PTI. He was also part of Buzdar cabinet. He was deseated because of voting for CM Hamza. He decided to contest the by-election on PML-N ticket which he has now lost. So, now he will try to get back into PTI, hence the camaraderie.

Please do not get too excited about this isolated change which is the result of personal interests rather than a result of embracing new principles of decency and fair play and sportsmanship. . The nation wants to see a reduction in adversarial politics but that would be difficult to achieve when lies and political propaganda are the basis of electioneering and dirty politics. Nevertheless these should our goals to achieve clean and honest politics and select clean and honest politicians difficult though it may be!

Sportsmanship demonstrated by the mature PMLN camp as always, we were expecting this from PTI captain IK but it never came, all he delivered was a spectacular show of hate and foul language, and a lesson to the youth to whom he always directly addresses on how to humiliate and slander those who oppose you or have a different opinion to you.

Let’s all learn from them and put country’s interest ahead of ours . Like Ask not what your country can do for you , ask you can do for the country . A humble request to IKN- Ego is your own worst enemy . Please abstain from name calling , vengeance and fake cases , please learn to be a great leader and unite the nation . If you practice it , I have a faith that Opposition will cooperate with you .

PML-N’s Salman Naeem and PTI’s Zain Qureshi have left an unforgettable memory which will be remembered for a long time to come. There is a lesson for Imran Khan to learn from much juniors PML-N’s Salman Naeem and PTI’s Zain Qureshi and how to accept defeat gracefully in the elections like Maryam Nawaz have gracefully accepted the defeat in Punjab by-elections and have expressed her sentiments in her tweet. The ECP throughout the process more particularly the CEC himself and employees of ECP have held very fair and transparent by-elections of Punjab elections despite the fact that Imran Khan have been showing dis-respect towards the CEC. Even after winning the by-elections of majority of seats Imran Khan has not changed his mind and want the CEC to be removed. It seems that Imran Khan wanted to bring his own CEC without giving any liberty to opposition which now the incumbent government as there is a wide gap between the thinking of the two political parties viz. PTI and PML-L.

It was massive miscalculation on Salman Naeem part to left PTI to become a lota at very important juncture. Perhaps greed and inexperience, being young candidate got better of him. Hopefully he will learn from this debacle and make better choices moving forward.
