Norwegian women's beach handball team fined for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms

Each player was fined for wearing shorts, which were termed 'improper clothing' according to European Federation regulations.
22 Jul, 2021

Norway’s women's beach handball team has been fined 1,500 Euros ($1,764) for being improperly dressed after the players wore shorts instead of bikini bottoms at a European championship match in Bulgaria.

The European Handball Federation (EHF) said in a statement that its disciplinary commission had dealt with “a case of improper clothing” in the bronze medal match against Spain.

It added that the shorts were “not according to the Athlete Uniform Regulations defined in the IHF Beach Handball Rules of the Game.”

The fine, worked out at 150 euros per player, was criticised by the Norwegian federation while the country’s sports minister Abid Raja said it was “completely ridiculous” and attitudes needed to change.

The Norwegian federation said on Twitter it was proud of the women for standing up and saying enough was enough.

“We at NHF stand behind you and support you. Together we will continue to fight to change the rules for clothing, so that players can play in the clothes they are comfortable with,” it added.

Beach Handball’s rules stipulate that female players must wear tops and bikini bottoms. Men wear tank tops and shorts.

“Athletes’ uniforms and accessories contribute to helping athletes increase their performance as well as remain coherent with the sportive and attractive image of the sport,” the uniform regulations add.

“Female athletes must wear bikini bottoms...with a close fit and cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg.”

The regulations are wrong. Uncovered thighs increase skin on skin rubbing, increasing risk of injuries like rash from rubbing. Fitting shorts that ensleeves the thighs are actually better for most sports than something shorter.

@MG Please explain how displaying inclusivity by allowing everyone to play dispute what they are wearing would be a bad thing. You're basically saying Muslim women should be excluded if they choose to follow religious beliefs. Sorry but I don't want to see anyone excluded because of clothing requirements that have nothing to do with actual sports ability and competition.

@Aurat March was that an error in typing or did you just equate the female body to piece of meat "Meat jism) ? Just so you know, the girls successfully challanged the rules. Also Muslim countries, not Pakistan, already have females represented in volleyball and other sports on professional international level. So clearly this speaks for a more uniform dresscode for players and preferably one zhere indeed the female decided what she wants to wear. Not you, not some federationand and not men with double standards. This is a clear case of discrimination.

@Sharif Khan your generalizations show lack of knowledge on this topic. Both men and women can be subject to harassment. Do you not live in Pakistan or follow the news? Pubescent boys are abducted and raped in Pakistan daily. There is a even a documentary on this called "Preying On Young Boys - Pakistan's Hidden Predators". Men are also raped in jails. Don't promote myths like clothing being responsible for rapes. It is clearly not and this has been debunked. I strongly urge you to talk to a rape crises center and be educated on the basics of rape and harassment as crimes and violence and that it happens to both girls, boys, children and in Pakistan even animals. Maybe we ahpuodcoverup men, children and animals too then.

So many comments full of generalizations about Europe, Norway, West and racist comments about females of Congo for some reason... Would we like it, if foreigners made generalizations about Pakistan, Pakistani women, men, customs, culture or crimes? No then we would object and call it xenophobia and racism. Well then we should practisethe values we speak of. I hope the many mostly/all male comments will show same zealous support for women, if they want to wear less covering clothes both in Pakistan and outside. After all freedom to wear works both ways too. Also I hope fans of Moroccos women's volleyball, will also support Pakistan forming a women's volleyball team who wear sleeveless tops and thigh length shorts and compete in public in/outside Pakistan and nobody complains about western agenda or behayhi, because that's exactly what Moroccos volleyball ladies wear. Morocco also hosts games for other countries but don't force foreign players to cover up. We can learn from Morocco.

@Imran Khan if you think that then what are women in Pakistan? Let's talk about the invisibility of women in our society, how we prefer women to stay home, not be independent, vocal and active in public. Let's talk about rapes, harassment of women and female children, common across Pakistan and not isolated cases in remote villages. Let's talk about the culture of honor and shame the responsibility of which we place on females or how women are seen as objects for mens desires, the derogatory language many socalled sharif Pakistanis use for girls they don't like. "Immoral" Europe/US/Canada/Australia are still top choices for Pakistanis to migrate to and raise kids there even though there are many flourishing Muslim countries to settle in. Like the Gulf, Malaysia etc. West has its flaws but we have surpassed them in every way. We just don't talk about it, live in denial and keep it an unpleasant secret. When you speak badly of all women in West, then you generalize western muslimas too
