German vlogger Christian Betzmann came under fire last week when he shared his opinions on the Palestinian crisis and Pakistanis protesting for deescalation and an immediate resolution to the crisis. When criticism against him reached its peak, his fiancée, actor Zoya Nasir, called off their engagement. Betzmann has finally responded to the controversy.

"First of all, this is not an apology," he said, calling it funny how people twist words for clout. "Pakistan has welcomed me with open arms," he said, echoing most white vloggers who have visited here, "and I'm forever grateful for that."

Betzmann said Pakistanis will adapt to his culture of honest criticism the way he had to adapt to theirs. He said the country is a third world country and that's where is criticism is rooted. Stating that he wants to see a better Pakistan, he argued that in order to do that "we have to accept the mistakes and find a way to fix them."

The recent Muslim convert also clarified that he never insulted any religion or its prayers. His point was to say that prayers are only as effective as the actions that go into their fruition, "especially when there's a war."

"When I had my shahada, I had learnt that Islam is the religion of peace, [but] when I see the social media comments from Pakistanis, I don't see peace, I see hate and violence," Betzmann said.

At the end he urged "we have to make sure we represent the religion in a positive way across the world."

He also spoke about the effort that goes into making YouTube videos; videos he makes because he cares for the country and wants to contribute to the improvement of its image globally.

"For my new video, I went to Orangi Town in Karachi, which is the biggest slum in the world. I was shooting in extreme pollution [and] heat to show you that even people in the slums are good people," Betzmann said.

Some might argue at it is not his responsibility to reveal to us how "good" our own people are, but then its also important to consider that the gap he's recognising is real.

The result of his efforts were, according to him, being bedridden for two days with food poisoning and fever. "If I didn't care about Pakistan, I would be sitting at home doing reaction videos," he said.

The German influencer's criticism of Pakistanis protesting and praying for Palestine was, quite obviously, not well received. It was viewed as a deeply problematic remark. Popular opinion maintained that it is indeed the people's responsibility, in light of a global information network tilted too much to one side, to speak up on the matter and highlight the plight of innocent Palestinians. Pakistanis also felt his criticism of Pakistan's poor infrastructure was unwarranted, though true, and fully known. TikTok star Romaisa Khan had a popular take on this.

This user also echoed public sentiment.

The comments didn't just affect his relationship with fiancée, but also his close friend fellow YouTuber Shahveer Jafry. Jafry came out in support of Nasir following her decision to call off their engagement.

"We're all with you, Zoya!" he proclaimed.

In a separate remark, replying to a YouTube comment, Betzmann addressed his parting with Nasir. When told that time will heal the hurt caused by his friends and fiancée cancelling him, he responded with a laughing emoji, claiming he had left her.

While there is an element of truth in Betzmann's words, there also lie several problems. His take on matters of a political nature are, of course, very different from those of average Pakistanis and are coloured by the fact that he isn't from here. But while for most people that means he doesn't have a right to comment on Pakistan, for others it means he brings a fresh take on issues we have been living with for decades.

One could argue that Betzmann — a content creator pandering to Pakistani audiences, residents and diaspora — should have a better understanding of our people's threshold for criticism, which is painstakingly low. This episode also serves as a reminder for other foreign content creators hoping to explore the Pakistani vlog industry — know your audience.

Christian definitely is an honest man in his expression. Yes-Pakistan is a third-world country in infrastructure. Pakistan is full of pollution and yes we do not like to admit our shortfalls . We are dishonest and we do not care for suffering local people at all. No one remembers children of Hazara coal.miners who recently were killed brutally. The guy left us with a lesson if we are receptive to learn.

" I was shooting in extreme pollution [and] heat to show you that even people in the slums are good people," Betzmann said. Did you have the preconceived notion then that the good people were meant to be only in better areas??

Garbage and pollution is a serious issue and, unfortunately, such a naturally gifted and beautiful country suffers from people created problem. I don't know who this guy is, but his statement is true. Dawn, why don't you publish an article on the garbage and pollution tracking government performance? Or are you waiting for another significant Karachi incident to happen?

I agree with Betzman. Truth often hurts. He is right about Pakistan, although I may disagree with him on Palestine. While it is good to see Pakistanis whole heartedly supporting Palestine, I think they should first try to put their own house in order. Being emotional won't get you anywhere. Betzman views on Pakistan are based on ground realities.

It is a cristal clear message from him. Yes Pakistan is a 3rd world country, garbage and infrastructure issues are everywhere in Pakistan. Karachi population is more than 300 million, whereas Germany has only 900 million. Slum area: Orangi town is an Insustrial area, but not a slum. One can find all types of factories, runs inside a home in Orangi. But due to neglect from current governments whole Karachi looks like a slum. Food poison: One can have food poisoning due to climiate differences and food and water changes. Food poisoning take 2- 3 days normal. It is due to Pakistan and love from Pakistanis you revert to Islam. Islam is Peace, but you will find Muslims with different approaches. Our five fingers are not equal. People wrote 'rude comments' due to your Ex-fiancée statement and not due to your visit to Pakistan or your faith. Your Ex- fiancée told in media that you support jews... So please clear yourself. Suggestion: Avoid to discuss your personal issues on media.

The Jews especially those who adhere to Zionist ideology are clever people who are master of manipulating public minds and opinions. But I believe this guy is right when he says the he left Zoya Nasir rather her breaking her engagement. He shows his inner love for Pakistan when confronted with his personal problems with a girl who goes on holidays with the guy to Turkey and Bahamas .The relationship finished he got what he wanted from the relationship as it is the norm when guys are not sincere. A lesson for other “modern “ women in Pakistan and their hypocritical supporters who are desperate to create promiscuous society just like the West and the consequences will be just the same.

He could have used better choice of words. He should also read about what a Muslim should feel and do for another suffering Muslim as part of his/her faith. Pakistanis showed support for Palestine because of the deep understanding of that feeling of brotherhood with other muslims. And he should also read about the ‘slums’ in other countries. Yes orangi town needs improvement but it’s not a slum by any stretch of the imagination. Pakistan despite being a third world country does not have any slums. It’s a country where even a low paid worker can afford to eat a decent meal from a theyla. His relation with Zoya Nasir is their personal business.

@Zulfiqar your comment is a witness how negatively we re-act to a constructive criticism. Orangi Town is in Pakistan and he pointed out a truth. Why are you afraid of accepting that Orangi Town and many other areas in Karachi are really worse than slums and we as a nation are devoid of importance of hygene. Regarding ypur claim to Palestine-what about Ugher Muslims? What about Hazara coal miners killings whose massacre is forgotten by us in days and culprits are not caught still?what about everyday rapes of minors? Do not tell me our country has no sufferings. Love and charity starts from home. Palestine is another country. Muslims in Pakistan are dying in murders in accidents each day and you are looking at Palestine!!!

Christian, yes we are a developing country and that's partly because we are a young nation ( as compared to yours) that got its freedom only 74 years ago. All developing countries have poverty, slums and they suffer pollution problems too. We hope and struggle to overcome these problems sometime in the future. One thing I would like to remind you is, that this same developing country once lent money to your developed homeland Germany when after the war, they were in a dire state. Lastly, I would say that it is not your criticism but your choice of words that have hurt the people most. There are many polite ways to say the same things.

Note that Republic of Cyprus was never ever independent prior to 1960 but today its all infrastructure is fully developed& national health care looks after every person. Iceland recovered wonderfully from bankruptcy& now is considered one of most civilized countries n planet. Pl do not justify. Think to improve urself . This is the only way to move forward. @Chrís Dăn "Why are you afraid of accepting that Orangi Town and many other areas in Karachi are really worse than slums and we as a nation are devoid of importance of hygene." That's not the point. Every single Pakistani is aware of the challenges facing the country, whether it's sewage, pollution or common littering. The issue is that this German clown seems to think we owe him a debt of gratitude, just because he's a white face. Are you aware that there are countless Pakistanis who have been working tirelessly to improve the state of the country, long before this saviour wannabe was even born? It's easy to bash the country and claim that we're all terrible, degenerate people, but frankly that's the product of a colonised mindset. If you can't praise Pakistan's own champions but reserve all your admiration for some self-righteous white millennial, then perhaps your issues go deeper than you realise.

@Chrís Dăn "Pakistanis as a nation are not working for hygenic living style specifically in Orangi Town. Otherwise it could have been a better place. " That's an unfair assessment of millions of Pakistanis. By all means criticise the authorities who have failed for seven decades to provide people with adequate sanitation, but the blame lies with them, not with the public. It's astounding to write off 200 million people that way. If you read Christian's messages, it's very clear he doesn't identify as a Pakistani - in fact he's offering sermons on behalf of the developed world. There are lots of non-Pakistanis living in the country who publicise the same issues, but do so with compassion and sincerity - read some of Shaneira Akram's views to see what I mean.

@Erum Aziz It is clear that facts, common sense and reality are not your strengths, thats why you fabricated numbers. Let me educate you. "Karachis population is 300 million"? Thats funny considering Pakistans total population is around 220 million. Try 14, 9mil Germanys population is not "900 million". It is 83.02 million. You need to ask your school for your money back. Also Orangi Town was indeed named the worlds biggest slum. I am surprised you only use numbers and informtion when they benefit your views but are in denial and dismissive about same numbers and information when they dont support your views. Cherry picking much? As for intolerance and hate, the way you have addressed me in the past with your prejudices and judgemental mindset (simply because I disagreed with your made up and unsubstantiated claims) you are no one to preach. First be the change you seek in others. Christian is right. No society can change for better when unwilling to confront its own issues.
