Fatima Bhutto co-edits upcoming anthology of art, poetry, personal stories and reporting on Gaza
Author and activist Fatima Bhutto has co-edited a new anthology titled Gaza: The Story of a Genocide as part of a literary intervention aimed at documenting and resisting the ongoing annihilation of Palestinian life in Gaza.
Slated for release on October 7 by Verso Books, the volume has been compiled in collaboration with Indian journalist and author Sonia Faleiro. All proceeds from the book will go directly to support Palestine via the UNRWA.
Electric Literature unveiled the cover of the book on Instagram in a collaborative post with Bhutto, Faleiro, Books4Gaza, and Verso, describing it as “an urgent and powerful collection of personal testimony, poetry, photography, art, and frontline reportage”.
The striking cover, designed by Chantal Jahchan features motifs of the keffiyeh and olive trees.
Gaza: The Story of a Genocide’s contributors include recipients of the Palestine Book Award, Arab American Book Award, National Book Award, Pulitzer Prize, Gandhi Peace Award, and Emmy Awards.
The book features voices from across the Palestinian diaspora and beyond, including survivors, poets, photojournalists, and award-winning authors. Among them are Ahmed Alnaouq, who writes of the unimaginable loss of 21 family members, Noor Alyacoubi, who reflects on Israel’s weaponisation of starvation, Mariam Barghouti, who examines the brutality of Israeli settler violence in the West Bank, and Eman Bashir, who captures the devastating reality of “a wounded child, no surviving family”.
In addition to essays and testimonies, the book includes visual contributions — art and photography that document both trauma and resistance — as well as poetry that honours those silenced by war.
The collection is dedicated in part to the late Palestinian poet Hiba Abu Nada, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home in Khan Younis on October 20, 2023.
Bhutto has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian liberation both on social media and international forums. Through Gaza: The Story of a Genocide, she and her collaborators seek to preserve memory and mobilise solidarity.
The anthology is an essential account of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, and a means for readers around the world to engage, bear witness, and materially support Palestinians in their fight for freedom.
Priced at $19.95, the book is currently available for pre-order via the Verso website.
