Fatima Bhutto co-edits upcoming anthology of art, poetry, personal stories and reporting on Gaza

All proceeds from Gaza: The Story of a Genocide will be donated to the UNRWA.

Author and activist Fatima Bhutto has co-edited a new anthology titled Gaza: The Story of a Genocide as part of a literary intervention aimed at documenting and resisting the ongoing annihilation of Palestinian life in Gaza.

Slated for release on October 7 by Verso Books, the volume has been compiled in collaboration with Indian journalist and author Sonia Faleiro. All proceeds from the book will go directly to support Palestine via the UNRWA.

Electric Literature unveiled the cover of the book on Instagram in a collaborative post with Bhutto, Faleiro, Books4Gaza, and Verso, describing it as “an urgent and powerful collection of personal testimony, poetry, photography, art, and frontline reportage”.

The striking cover, designed by Chantal Jahchan features motifs of the keffiyeh and olive trees.

Gaza: The Story of a Genocide’s contributors include recipients of the Palestine Book Award, Arab American Book Award, National Book Award, Pulitzer Prize, Gandhi Peace Award, and Emmy Awards.

The book features voices from across the Palestinian diaspora and beyond, including survivors, poets, photojournalists, and award-winning authors. Among them are Ahmed Alnaouq, who writes of the unimaginable loss of 21 family members, Noor Alyacoubi, who reflects on Israel’s weaponisation of starvation, Mariam Barghouti, who examines the brutality of Israeli settler violence in the West Bank, and Eman Bashir, who captures the devastating reality of “a wounded child, no surviving family”.

In addition to essays and testimonies, the book includes visual contributions — art and photography that document both trauma and resistance — as well as poetry that honours those silenced by war.

The collection is dedicated in part to the late Palestinian poet Hiba Abu Nada, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home in Khan Younis on October 20, 2023.

Bhutto has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian liberation both on social media and international forums. Through Gaza: The Story of a Genocide, she and her collaborators seek to preserve memory and mobilise solidarity.

The anthology is an essential account of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, and a means for readers around the world to engage, bear witness, and materially support Palestinians in their fight for freedom.

Priced at $19.95, the book is currently available for pre-order via the Verso website.

Remarkably, Fatima Bhutto has an uncanny resemblance to the well-known Palestinian activist and lawyer, Diana Buttu. Though, I'm certain they are unrelated, due to their respective heritage. Yet, they both speak passionately about Palestine and the suffering of the people in the occupied territories, the historical injustice and crimes of the colonisers and their bull-dog, Israel.

Who cares for Pakistan’s support when USA is firmly behind Israel! USA treats Israel as its 51st state?

Ms. Bhutto’s criticisms are outright biased and utterly untrue. She must apportion the blame for the Gaza carnage fully and wholly on the Muslim backed, The Hamas, for their misadventure of attacking Israel, killing 1200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 250 innocent Israelis. Israel has to do anything and everything to free the 250 Israelis from the Hamas captivity, if means collateral death of 58,000 Gazans, so it be, the Hamas don’t really care for death of 58,000 Gazans, anyway.

Evangelical Trump supporters believe that Jesus Christ will return to Earth after his ascension, which occurred two thousand years ago. The idea is based on messianic prophecies. By this messianic hope - the Second Advent - Israeli settlers are being financed in Palestine. US Embassy move to Jerusalem in 2017 was a part of the Evangelical messianic phrophesy !

Great work, Fatima. Certainly, this is one of the additions to the work that shows to the so-called civilized world how they tied the hands of the Gaza people and kill them.

@Mahmood I had to look her up as I didn't know of her until your comment. She has a very very impressive resume. Women like Fatima Bhutto, Diana Butto are who should be spoken more about. Role models for young females. Bhutto has long been a voice for the oppressed and persecuted. The only Bhutto I like. Her brother is cool too.

@LAILA, In case you were not around in the 90s, the most articulate and eloquent Palestinians I've heard, among many, were the late Dr. Edward Said - then Professor of Oriental Studies at Columbia University, - and Dr. Clovis Maqsood - Palestinian Ambassador to the UN at that time, When I lived in the US, I never missed the 11:30 late show, "NIght Line" with Ted Kopel (himself a well-spoken host), where Dr. Said and the then Israeli FM, Netanyahu used to go head to head to present their arguments, which left you in aw of Dr. Saeed beautiful discourse, strong statements, which made you love English Literature even more. His command of facts and figures, connections all the way to Yasser Arafat, and historical contexts was truly to be admired. May these sous RIP and their dreams of State of Palestine come true! You can find many of their works published online and on their affiliate websites

@EL CID. I totally agree! The greatest tragedy is not that the Palestinians are unable to defend themselves, But that 55 Muslim-majority nations, (comprising over 1.5 Billion people) some of the wealthiest Arab nations who pretend to have 'solidarity" towards the Palestinians could've used their leverage against the West and Israel, have failed to stop the slaughter and genocide, carried out on live TV, by mere 5 million Israelis. In my opinion, Colombia, Ireland and Spain (all non-Arab, majority Christian nations) are doing more for the Palestinians than any Arab/Muslim nation.
