Cambridge just added 'accha' to its dictionary and Twitter has no chill

While some find it amusing, the Hindi and Urdu descendants are fighting over for ownership
07 Dec, 2020

Viewed as the benchmark for the English language, the Cambridge International Dictionary of English, by the Cambridge University Press has just become more inclusive, having added the word 'accha' formally to their list of over 140,000 words, phrases, and meanings.

Given the latest (and might we add, surprising) addition, many from the desi community have some thoughts on the update.

While some find it amusing, the Hindi and Urdu language descendants are fighting for ownership. Here's how Twitter is responding in chaos.

Some are conflicted

While others aren't quite convinced

It IS a little weird, isn't it?

The students are truly grateful

But the keyboard mafia is straight-up annoyed

However, Urdu enthusiasts are raising their hands up to rejoice

The suggestions have started rolling in....hmmm

It cannot be accha, which rhymes with 'cc' in 'accept'. Should be spelled "achcha".

You can't be talking about literate Hindu fighting over it. Every literate person can differ Hindi and Urdu. Please don't spice up these thing over an educational stuff.

It is Aamir Khan's favourite pause-word. Ask Karan Johar, Rajkumar Hirani and the Dangal Girls.

Urdu enthusiasts owe words only borrowed from Arabic, Farsi, Turki, Uzbeki, English or any other language of the world other than Hindi. 'Accha" involves writing and sounding of the word in 'harfs' existing only in Hindi. Therefore, technically as per the way of speaking , they must not own it. (Such words include Hindi herfs like Jha, Gha, tha, kha etc. etc.)
