Kangana Ranaut's upcoming movie Manikarnika under fire for 'distorting history'

Manikarnika's makers have already clarified that the film is not a biopic but the film is now facing opposition

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming period drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is based on the life of the 19th century queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai.

While the makers have clarified that the movie is not a biopic, the flick has somehow still come under fire for — yep, you guessed it — allegedly distorting history.

The Sarva Brahmin Mahasabha, an organisation of Brahmins, has raised objection alleging misrepresentation of historical facts. In fact, the organisation has sent a warning letter to the makers, and have threatened to stall the shooting of the film in Rajasthan.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Sarva Brahman Mahasabha president Suresh Mishra held a press conference in Jaipur to address the issue. He claimed that the film shows an affair between the Rani of Jhansi and an Englishman: "We learnt about it from our friends and acquaintances in various parts of Rajasthan where some scenes of the film are being shot. The film is based on a foreigner’s book and tries to dampen the queen’s reputation.”

“Nobody can even imagine that Rani Lakshmibai could have an affair. She died fighting the British at a young age. If a film is to be made on her life, it should be a biopic,” says Mishra in his letter.

However, producer Kamal Jain has clarified that Manikarnika doesn't portray anything offensive. He told India Today, "As responsible filmmakers, we have taken utmost care while portraying Rani Lakshmibai's character and have consulted historians and scholars. Rani Lakshmibai was a freedom fighter and one of the most respected leaders our country has seen. She is a symbol of valour and the film's story depicts the same."

"The film doesn't portray anything objectionable about her and nor has the film distorted the history in anyway. The film showcases Rani Lakshmibai in most respectful manner and is an inspirational story which every kid and family member would love to see. We as country would be proud to showcase the bravery, courage and heroism of Rani Lakshmibai to the world," he adds.

The makers have further stated that they're open to sharing the script with authorised people who have any doubts and that their film is a tribute to Rani Lakhsmibai.

This attitude towards any movie is not acceptable.

Its not about the movie. There is evidently a lot of underlying politics at play, with such little known fringe groups creating controversies out of thin air. Padmaavat issue had a part in destroying BJP in the recent Rajasthan assembly by-polls by alienating Rajputs. With Manikarnika there is evidently yet another attempt for a manufactured controversy in Rajasthan, this time targeting Brahmin voters, with the state going to Assembly polls this year.

It is just a movie, so Enjoy! If you don't like it then don't see it. The nay Sayers have nothing else to do but create trouble and the conspiracy theorists will make a mountain out of a mole whenever they get a chance. However, in the meantime it is the general public that suffers from watching a good entertainment.

It's purely a political move by Congress to defeat BJP at Rajasthan similar to karni sena now joining Congress party as an ally

This trend of making period movies is getting stronger, especially after the flicks like Pad Man.

Now everyone wants to threaten movie makers. Rajputs, Muslims, Brahmins and what not. Soon we'll only make movies about aliens and zombies so that no living person is offended. By the way these people shouldn't be watching movies

Rajpots / Shri Rajput Karni Senagave give huge publicity to PADMAAVAT bcoz of their agitation. NOW Brahmins / Sarva Brahmin Mahasabha will do the same to MANIKARNIKA. Producers of both the films will enjoy as they don't have to pay huge money for advertisement / publicity of their films. Just pay little portions to these organisations leaders. That's it.

@Surendra Roy But you accept the same attitude in case of Salman Rushdie when your government banned his book. He was even barred from Jaipur literary festival. You cannot have different rules for different people.
