An epic battle movie from one of India’s lesser-known film industries has trumped Bollywood by becoming the country’s highest-grossing film to date, an industry analyst said on Monday.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, the final instalment of a two-part fantasy adventure, has made more than Rs 10 billion ($156 million) worldwide since hitting screens on April 28, according to experts.

“Baahubali 2 has crossed Rs 1,000 crore (ten billion) in worldwide gross collections, outdoing Aamir Khan’s PK which was previously the number one Indian film worldwide,” says Indian film trade analyst Ramesh Bala.

The south Indian movie, which is laden with special effects, has surpassed 2014 Bollywood blockbuster PK, which made around $120 million, as India’s biggest-grossing movie yet.

Baahubali 2 has crossed Rs 1,000 crore (ten billion) in worldwide gross collections, outdoing Aamir Khan’s PK which was previously the number one Indian film worldwide,” said Indian film trade analyst Ramesh Bala.

Bollywoodhungama.com, which tracks India’s movie industry, also reported that Baahubali 2 had become the highest grossing Indian film worldwide in history.

Baahubali, meaning ‘The One With Strong Arms’, tells the story of two warring brothers battling for control of a fictional Indian kingdom and its elaborate scenes has seen it compared to hit American movie 300.

The SS Rajamouli-directed film features elaborate fight sequences and computer graphics including rampaging elephants and a bull stampede.

It was shot in the Telugu and Tamil languages of southern India -- whose film industries, known as Tollywood and Kollywood respectively -- are often overshadowed by Hindi-speaking Bollywood.

The movie was dubbed into Hindi and other regional Indian languages and has sparked a wave of Baahubali mania across the country as fans flock to cinemas to find out how the series ends after the first film finished in a cliffhanger.

Baahubali: The Beginning made around $100m in worldwide ticket sales when it was released in 2015, according to industry estimates.

The combined cost of making the two movies was about $70 million, according to estimates, well below the budgets for major Hollywood films.

South Indian movies are far superior to those of Bollywood - not that it says much! They tend to have proper stories, very little superficial acting, much less use of English, and mostly filmed within (South) India, and definitely far more entertaining. This comes from a superior and more educated background of the Southern states.

baahubali is an astounding movie and a trend setter. In South movies it is the director who calls the shots and rajamouli a great story teller . Both bollywood and kollywood, tollywood all learn much from each other and stars are found across in all three industries and in many remakes. Its a win win situations for them rather than comparing between them . All three have their plus and minus .

Let's not agitate over who is the best. Anyways, viewers are the best judges and they decide what and whom they want to watch. Indian movies are watched the world over. @Raza True. You got to watch Malayalam movies, most of which are remade into Bollywood. They are just awesome with nice plot. Actors are dressed simply and story is real. Bollywood has become crap. It does not represent Indian culture anymore. It used to make a lot of good movies up until the 70. Now-a-days, it has become a bad copy of Hollywood with actors looking pathetic trying to imitate the West.

When you say "Lesser known" film industries, you are obviously being very stupid. South makes more films than Bollywood. Most of so called hits in Bollywood are remakes of South Indian movies. Bollywood either lifts a plot straight out of Hollywood, lifts a theme from South and makes a move calling it a hit! Also, North Indian audience is largely illiterate (BiMaRU states: Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, UP) and want to see an "item number" in every movie! See Malayalam movies for a change and find out what it is like. Find out about the real culture of India from South. North sucks! This is from someone who has lived in Delhi till age of 29, migrated to US for 22 years and now lives in Bangalore, South India.
