Javed Akhtar doesn't have a single romantic bone in his body, says Shabana Azmi

If Javed Akhtar can't be romantic, what hope is there for the rest of our significant others?
11 Apr, 2017

Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi are the epitome of the perfect Bollywood couple.

So imagine our shock when the actress revealed that her lyricist husband hasn't ever said anything romantic to her!

Talking about Akhtar — who just by the way has penned some of Bollywood’s most heartfelt songs — Azmi shared: “Many girls come [to me] and say, ‘You are so lucky to be married to him. He writes such romantic songs and poetry’. But Javed Akhtar doesn’t have a single romantic bone in his body. He has never said anything romantic to me.”

If Javed Akhtar can't be romantic, what hope is there for the rest of our significant others?

But hey, there's no shortage of witty banter amongst the duo, who've been married for over three decades.

When she complains about the lack of romance in their relationship, he shoots back: ‘If you are a trapeze artist in a circus, will you hang upside down in your own house?”

Azmi adds, “He still makes me laugh. He's very witty and funny. What we share is a very solid friendship. Javed is fond of saying that Shabana is such a good friend of mine that even marriage could not ruin it!”

Ugh, did someone say couple goals?

A die hard romantic person is the one who makes no bones with his better half.

That's fine. You don't have to be romantic to show your love. The fact that the two people are together after a long time shows that something is there between them which has ticked.

You must be living in a world of delusion or he acts stupid purposefully! He may not be romantic with his own wife and you think he is like that with others too?

Are you sure Shabana. Then who wrote "Ek Ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga"? It has to be the most romantic set of lyrics ever coming out of a pen,

A classic case of "Chiraag talae andhera?" Reminds me of a joke: The wife in this hypothetical couple that had been married for a long time asked her husband one day "do you still love me>" to which the husband responded "yeah" The wife said "but then why don't you tell me that?" The husband responded "Honey, when we got married 35 years ago, I told you "I love you," when I change my mind, I'll be sure and let you know."

The three simple words: l love you (darling), said sincerely and from the bottom of one's heart have a magic of their own. "It blesseth him that giveth and her that receiveth." To love and be loved is the essence of life. Most of us get so engrossed in seeking "happiness " in material acquisitions that we forget the fact that without love all else is for naught. Love is putting your partner's happiness and well being above your own.

How can anyone married to Shabana Azmi not say "I love you" to her? I am not even married to her and still I feel like saying that to her every time I see her photograph or read her writing

Javed has seen some of the worst days a boy in his initial years. He even slept in a studio security guard's vestibule for three straight nights coz he had nowhere to go. Poor boys cannot afford to be very romantic. You see they cannot afford spending over gfs coz they need the little money they have for food, clothing and shelter. The daughter of an aristocratic and famous man will never get it !

Jaise mandir me ho ik jalta diya! This line won my heart. Javed pictured the piousness, the light, the calmness and serenity of true love in these 7 words.

@Tahir A That depends on how you define romance. What's more romantic? A guy who runs and buys flowers for someone on Val Day as most guys do? Or someone who put's themselves on the line for one they love or care for? I'd say two is more out of the ordinary and therefore preferred.

@Khan : You completely missed the point. This is real romance when you accept a person for over thirty years with all their faults. Romance is not jumping each others bones for 30 minutes every so often. Your study of not being romantic with your own wife is thousand times better than fooling your wife and keeping three lovers outside, and when a person is so busy as he is, showing public affection takes a back seat.

Romance is sheer exhilaration in her vicinity and "tanhayi" in her absence. "Yeh armaan chypaye nahin chupte"
