British-Pakistani pop sensation Zayn Malik came under unexpected attack on Twitter yesterday, when fellow artiste Azealia Banks hurled a whole bunch of racial slurs at him.

Azealia had accused Zayn of copying her style in his latest video 'Like I Would' and unleashed the slurs after he apparently responded to her with a nonchalant "My @'s [Twitter mentions] are too good for you," reports Daily Mail.

Azealia subsequently deleted her tweets, but a quick-thinking Twitter user luckily grabbed screenshots:

There's more. She also dropped this rather uninventive insult...

And it spawned a hashtag on Twitter!

Zayn's fans and desis in general rallied together to shut Azealia down:

Desi social media celebs also responded:

It prompted comedian Jasmeet Singh to actually change his Twitter name to Dirty Punjab:

Azaelia did try to 'explain':

But it's too late as a UK festival already dropped her from its line-up:

Because here's the thing:

Good thing she didn't say anything about biryani, because then the desis would break the Internet!

Wow. This was quite impressive. In a time when racism and intolerance is at its worst, incidents like these show that there are more good people than bad out there. Haters need to be shown their rightful place, and I'm glad that so many people defended Zayn against such racist slurs. On a side note, more power to the desi community!

its funny that Azealia Banks her self is black. i mean, i can think of several racist insults. but i would never do that. or Zayn would never do that. Probably she got offended on something.

Zayn is one of the worlds most popular singers. He has made a great contribution to the music industry and made lots of money for Britain too , He should be knighted.

In all this , it was lost that actually curry is not a Pakistani dish so not really applicable to Zayn. Its a pure Indian dish. We in Pakistan love our Shorbaas :) .

Well it were not desis but Philip DeFranco who started talking about him. But obviously Desis picked up that trend as it was directed at them.

There are no great copiers than the British, they have copied the greatest epic Haazar Daastan the Persian masterpiece and then came Harry Potter series, see the film, read the great book of more than 20 volumes and then you will see how the Harry Potter writer has copied and made changes to the original stories. The British have even copied the great Ibn-e-Safi books in some of their spy films of early 70's. If one just gets down to research, he or she will be astonished by the sheer volume of copy products from Iran, Arab and the Indian subcontinent.

@Taimoor Khan Curry/Salan - not the same thing? Most of my friends are from pakistan and I lived with one for 3 years. The spices in the kitchen were pretty similar if you ask me :) .

@Satt I don't understand why you would, since her tweets (most of them not shown in this article) were absolutely dripping with vitriol and venom. Don't let your dislike for people with a Pakistani background blind you to what's right and wrong. Many people in the music industry have criticised Ms Banks for her tendency to start a fight with other singers; her accusations are baseless and rude.

Azelia should have rung him up to talk it over, not go on Twitter and accuse. When you have an audience, it is hard for either party to back down. The one who starts it can only be seeking publicity, nothing else. One question to Azelia, " can you tell us that you will never eat another curry ever. "
