We are 'fortunate' to have helpers and maids in Pakistan, says Hira Mani

She compared life in Pakistan to that in the US, noting that it's hard to do chores yourself.
23 Jun, 2021

Meray Paas Tum Ho star Hira Mani is currently vacationing in the US with her family and has been sharing her experiences on social media, much to her fans' enjoyment. She recently shared a post where she filmed herself fuelling up a car and made comments that we found rather odd.

In the Instagram post, Mani is seen standing at a gas station, filling fuel in the car herself, an odd sight for most Pakistanis. The post was captioned "apna khaana khud garam kero [reheat your own food]," a chant that was popularised by Aurat March protesters in 2019 and became the subject of much controversy.

"Something I appreciate very much is that women here do all of their work on their own," she said of life in the US. Comparing it to life in Pakistan, she said, "We live in a very fortunate country where we have a Tasneem or a Nazeera baji who we can call out to if we need anything. And when you’re at a gas station, there are so many people present to help you fill up your car’s tank."

And while it's true that labour is cheap here, we wouldn't exactly call it a fortunate country. The "fortunate" among us are able to avoid learning basic life skills because we can afford to hire people to do that for us but there are many, many more people — a majority of our population — who have to do it themselves.

Our "good fortune" essentially boils down to other people's poverty and the lack of quality life in Pakistan for the majority, which we consider a tragedy, not a "fortunate" occurrence.

It might be harder to clean your own home or fill your own gas tanks with fuel but we hope Pakistan can one day become a country where Tasneem or Nazeera baji are also fortunate enough that they don't have to clean someone else's homes.

We are not fortunate to have helpers and maids these are just poor people working for 100-150$ a month it's because you live in a poor country. This is not something you should be proud of.

It is always a good idea to not use your mobile phone whilst putting fuel in the car, as it can lead to catastrophic fire. Celebrities should be discouraging rather then encouraging this dangerous practice.

Ms. Mani you are not fortunate but lazy. Having maids makes you rely on others. Thus you are not able to express yourself freely. In the states we do not have maids or servants and we are happy. We like to do our own things. We do not want extra people around us. Also bear in mind you live in a third world country. You should be working harder then the people in the states.

I am apalled at reading all the comments, below. We, Pakistanis, have no sense of humor, no idea about joking about ourselves. We have such a thin skin, that any comments about ourselves is either : 1. Anti-Pakistani 2. Pro-India ( enemy - ) 3. Islamophobia or anti-religion Lighten up guys ! We should be able to joke about ourselves without feeling inferior or insulted...

@Zulfiqar that was a caution with older phones. Currently there is only one in a 10 billion chance that it will cause fire. Do note that nowadays cell phone will be used as touch/tap devices at gas stations as well. Only if your cell phone's battery explodes for some reason then you are in for a big boom and that can happen if you are using a cheap charger and the phone is charging inside the car while you pump. Paying with the app on the phone and then filling up gas undistracted is what is promoted by Ontario's Technical Standards and Safety Authority. She was in USA, there an uneducated person can flag her but do note that the research was conducted in Texas.

Not All but quite a lot families in Pakistan feel proud to have servants and maids and do Abuse them. Hopefully, one day our Pakistan will have economic conditions where none will be forced to work as cooking maids. Sincerely

Maids & helpers are available in US at $15/hour wage. And they clean up on scientific lines, very fast and quality seen. As regards roti you must buy frozen packed naan about 20 cents per naan. Both in India & Pak servants & maids are traditionally accepted as part of family. They keep attached for their whole life, and nicely taken care of by employers. About filling gas in cars, in Pak the gas station owners prefer cash payments, not by credit cards, hence their staff take care of. Still reports are rampant many youngsters sped away their cars after their tank filled. There’s a peace of mind and secure system in US, people have no extra time to waste discussing clothes, or engage in mother- in- law politics, everybody is busy in job, while on Saturday/ Sunday time consumed in groceries, laundry, or a visit to lake or shopping mall. The people are always ready to help, they are honest, true, and caring. Hira Mani must acknowledge that. And thanks for visiting US.

Stupid ignorant people. And yes, helpers are available everywhere in the world provided you can pay for it. Ever heard of the butler?

Yes we are fortunate. No doubt in this. But most of the Pakistanis donot give respect to the maids and labour working at their home. Some educated people think we are superior than them. Some people having the superiority complex of being rich and educated donot give respect to the labour. They are short tempered. If they are in a good mood they will talk politely otherwise not. They donot realise the self respect of the poor which are working at their homes. My servant's cousin's son used to work at somebodys house and that house owner's son killed him by hanging on the wall. Although my servants cousin did file a case in the court but since they were relatives of a famous politician so no action was taken And there are some politicians who use their power to threat employees working at their homes. In these countries there are some rich people who have servants working at their home but if they mistreat them the servant can file a case in the police and action will be taken.
