Maulana Tariq Jameel launches flagship store in Karachi

Maulana Tariq Jameel launches flagship store in Karachi

MTJ, the scholar's namesake fashion brand, was inaugurated on Tariq Road.
26 Apr, 2021

Maulana Tariq Jameel announced his intentions to set up a fashion brand earlier this year, hoping to use the proceedings from the business to fund his madressahs, in addition to building schools and hospitals in the country. That intention has now manifested into a shiny new reality on Karachi's Tariq Road.

The maulana was accompanied by his associates and the executives running the show. He cut the ribbon and offered a dua to kick off the launch of MTJ.

At the end of the event, he also spoke to the media.

"The thought first came to me in 2000. I always wanted to run a madressah without using zakat money. But I couldn’t find enough resources for it. So, when the pandemic happened, the Almighty put this thought in my head to start a business and use that money to run the Islamic institutions," he had said in the announcement made on his official social media channels.

"That was my intention and a few of my friends collaborated with me. Hence, we launched a brand with my name."

The store features a complete collection of eastern wear, ranging from formal to casual, from wedding attire to breezy lawn pret. The products are priced in the range of Rs2,000 to Rs5,000, competitive with the general market.

Following suit with the other religio-fashion brands in the country, MTJ also features faceless mannequins.

Here's what the brand's casual wear like looks like.

Are you a soon-to-be groom? MTJ might be the place to visit this season.

There's footwear too.

Maulana Jameel's initial announcement was met with some criticism and he was not comfortable with the disapproval thrown his way for running a business in the name of religiosity. In response, he said, "I don’t understand where this idea of clerics running such businesses isn’t righteous came from, even though a lot of religious personalities we follow have been successful businessmen."

Funds generated from the income of store will be used to run Madrissas? Hopefully stores built are for commercial purposes. Stores will have to pay taxes like another out let's. Nothing to do with religion/ Islam. It is up to the owner to use earning generated from this business the way he choose. This is true that Molana like Junaid Jamshed is using his religious attachment for marketing.

Who know Tariq Jamil as a person, it's Tableeg and Islam who made her m popular and now he sold it. It's better to run a Madrassah by Charity or Zakat rather to sell his Islamic fame.

@M. Saeed remind us please, who were trading in Makkah in 6th-7th century AD? You know, traveling from Makkah, through Madina and into Levant, particularly trading in cloth? Many of them leading caravans by themselves. Didn't some of them later become some of the most important personalities in Islam? Or is following in their footsteps not an honorable thing?

@TZaman it isn't news. It has bern overcrowded for centuries now. Which is one reason you see the competition to out-ridiculous each other to stand out. But how could you not expect it? People are having children, and they can't afford to feed, clothe or educate them. Religious cemenaries are often the only choice they have. Government wouldn't regulate them, as it isn't a vote winner. Too often we blame others, but it is us, the society at fault to bring about the results that do come.

@Chrís Dăn i haven't a clue about fashion terms. But it seems reasonable to me. I'd reduced and simplified the stitching to reduce weight. But other wise it should be fine. Women only wear one layer of clothes, whereas men, such as us wear one layer above our furcoat. In real heat, we get sweaty even without wearing any clothes.

The bottom line really is that religion is used to make money, it is about influencing others, it is about power in politics, it is about reasons to create distrust, about war. It is like clay on a potters wheel and can be given any shape he wants, that is how religion is used by many. In many countries like ours it is at equal status as politics, those who practice politics are known as politicians and those who preach are known as Maulana's but in actual fact practice politics., that is where the schism lies, playing both sides as and when convenient.

Running a kind of fashion business in the name of generating funds for Madressahs doesn't sounds good, apparently he is endorsing westerns and latest fashions trends. I am anticipating this trend from big mosque and trusts to be followed in coming days. Everyone mosque would start doing a business in the name of generating their own funds for meeting expenses.
