Shiv Sena activists threaten Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan

Shiv Sena announced plans to hinder promotions of the actors' upcoming movies, Raees and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
20 Oct, 2015

Continuing its string of attacks on Pakistani luminaries, Shiv Sena – a Hindu extremist party engaged in a ruling coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra – has made Pakistani movie stars, Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan, its latest target.

According to Emirates 247, Shiv Sena announced plans to hinder promotions of the two actors' upcoming movies, Raees and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

"We have taken a stand not to allow any Pakistani actor, cricketer or performer to step on Maharashtra soil," says Akshay Bardapurkar, general Secretary of the Shiv Sena Chitrapat Sena, the party's film wing.

He adds, "We are not really bothered about who is signing these Pakistanis in their film. Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar, Shah Rukh Khan etc are responsible citizens and they should not cast Pakistanis in their film."

Mahira's debut Bollywood flick Raees, in which she stars opposite Shah Rukh Khan, is slated for release on Eid 2016, whereas Fawad's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai is scheduled for a Diwali opening, also next year.

The threat against Mahira and Fawad is the latest incident that adds to Shiv Sena's spate of attacks against Pakistanis working in India.

Mekaal Hasan Band, which recently reconfigured into a Pak-India line-up with Sharmista Chatterjee as the band's new vocalist, was the last target of Shiv Sena's hostility towards Pakistanis.

Their concert in Ahmedabad last weekend was cancelled at the last minute due to protests by Shiv Sena activists on the day of their performance, reported Indian Express.

The band also faced Shiv Sena's hostility in early 2014 during a press conference announcing their latest album, Huffington Post India reported.

Earlier in the month, Shiv Sena forced the cancellation of ghazal singer Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai, saying that "We can't have cultural ties with Pakistan when they kill our soldiers."

In late April this year, Atif Aslam's concert in Pune was cancelled due to Shiv Sena's threats, despite the sale of over 1,000 tickets, reported Indian Express.

Outside of the entertainment sphere, Shiv Sena has also forced commentators Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar as well as umpire Aleem Dar to quit their participation in the ongoing India-South Africa series, and return to Pakistan.

Moreover, Shiv Sena attacked the headquarters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday, just before Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan was to meet BCCI chief Shashank Manohar to discuss a bilateral series in December.

The host of Pakistan's former Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri's book launch was also subjected to an ink attack by a group of Shiv Sena activists.

India needs another Gandhi urgently. It’s not just celebrities, stars and sportsmen suffering, it seems tourists too. An Aussie was harassed for his tattoo. Increasingly, cities are falling prey to vigilante groups, couples are yanked out of the privacy of their rooms by cops who hold the view that their being together is against the culture. Women are directed, by none other than an elected Chief Minister of a State that boasts the worst sex ratio in the country, to shed their clothes if they desire freedom. BJP cadres go about preaching the message of cultural exclusion.

Indian posters here need to understand that Pakistani Actors are invited by Indian Producers. None of the Pakistani actors go begging to be in Indian movies. Their skills/looks/voice/whatever are desires by Indians and for their services there is always a charge. It is simple economics. If fascists elements in India do not want Pakistanis on their soil, that's fine too. These actors and singers are not starving without Indian money.

The actions of these Indian extremists is of course despicable. But why are so many Pakistanis going to India? One can say, it is more money and fame in India that drives them, but there are other things besides money and fame, that must be considered. There is a thing called self respect, which they perhaps don't consider. Lots of Indians feel that Pakistanis come to beg here. As a Pakistani fan, it is disgusting and humiliating.

Shiv Sena is just a bunch of thugs and goons. Most Indians (Hindus included) hate them. Unfortunately they have gained much favor amongst a few right wing Hindu supremacists and hence the government has a hard time controlling them. Fawad Khan is absolutely adored in India. I hope he shakes off this nonsense and continues with the good work!

@sandeep Artists want to work in India because it is an economic hub for them, same as many Indians go to the US for better career opportunities. Economic hubs for different professions shift globally with time, and people move around to avail of the opportunities they bring. Why are so many Indians (and Pakistanis) working in the IT sector in the US? Why are Indians now CEO's of Google and Microsoft? Why didn't they choose to stay in India and continue to work in India and make a Google or Microsoft of their own for their own motherland as you say? The wanted to avail of the better opportunities in the US which is a technological hub that's why!

We have to think if there is something wrong with Shiv Sena's agenda. First, it will only hurst their own reputation and of their country's. Second, cultural collaboration is the best way to bridge the gaps and prevent any border hostilities that they have elicited. Third, let it be a fair game of talent! I know some of my good friends from India love to watch Pakistani TV dramas. No one is stealing opportunities. We should grow out of 68 years of ignorance. The Brits conquered Bharat by the infamous divide-and-conquer policy and then left us divided to fight for ever so we would not have a chance to think about what they did. Yes, there is some wrong with their agenda and we all know it. There are no two nations in the world with so much in common as these two. It is time to change the way we think and work together.
