Ranveer, Deepika reportedly seeking psychiatric help after shooting 'Padmavati'

It's no scret that people are going gaga over Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone's first looks from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming period drama, Padmavati. That being said, for some actors, just looking the part isn't enough. And so they delve into method acting, completely inhabiting the character they're playing.

And sometimes, that can take a toll.

According to Cosmopolitan India, the two actors have sought out psychiatric treatment to overcome the dark mindset they had to put themselves in to play Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmavati respectively.

Singh allegedly locked himself up in his apartment for days to get into character.

"Getting out of this dark, intimidating mindset wasn't easy for him. The film has also been shot for almost a year now, so sustaining the Khilji persona was very challenging. It affected his reactions and behaviour towards people, which is why his friends advised him to get help," said a source close to the actor.

Legend has it that Padmini performed mass suicide – called jauhar -- by jumping on funeral pyres alongside all the women of her fort when it became clear that Khilji was going to win the war from her husband, Raja Rawal Ratan Singh (played by Shahid Kapoor).

Apparently, Padukone was extremely disturbed while preparing for the film's climax, the self-immolation scene. The suicide scene transported her back to the time when the actor was herself battling depression which she has openly discussed in the past.

A source told FIlmfare: "When one is working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he wants one to feel committed and feel the character all the time. Sanjay takes his time to shoot every sequence. The build-up to the jauhar scene and the scene itself was rather elaborate. Deepika has already spoken about clinical depression earlier in her career. Hence, she does not want to do anything that will take her back to that space."

The film is slated for release on 1 December.
