MPA Hina Parvez Butt says Aap Ki Izzat has lessons for mothers-in-law, husbands
Hina Parvez Butt, the chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority, has been putting in her hours with the TV and she’s found another drama with a valuable lesson.
In a video posted on her social media, she said she found Ahsan Khan’s acting in Aap Ki Izzat “phenomenal”, but she really had to talk about the show’s portrayal of domestic issues between spouses and the challenges that accompany them.
First things first, she said mothers-in-law had a primary responsibility to make their daughters-in-law feel at home. “When a girl gets married into your household, accept her as a family member,” the Punjab MPA said.
She asked men’s mothers not to create hurdles for their sons’ wives and avoid destroying the peace in their households. “Give [your daughters-in-law] time to adjust and if you’ve experienced trauma [when you were in her place], it’s not necessary for you to pass it onto the next generation.”
For men, Butt said the lesson was to ask themselves if they’d be okay with their wives having extra-marital affairs. “If you can’t bear that thought, then weigh yourself in the same scale,” she said.
“Expecting your wife to forget everything [you’ve done] and accept you as you are, that’s very difficult,” the legislator said. Despite that, she said, people try to save their marriages.
“Spouses have their quarrels, they get upset with each other; but at the end, when they get back together, the picture completes.”
Butt said the Punjab Women Protection Authority tries to get married couples to reconcile by serving as mediators. “Our objective is to prevent households from breaking apart.”
Aap Ki Izzat is the story of politician Tabish (Khan) and Beena (Urwa Hocane), his wife whom he constantly neglects emotionally several years after their youthful romance led to marriage.
The show, through its portrayal of a female lead who learns to fight back against her husband’s neglect and abuse, has garnered appreciation from fans.
The show ended on Saturday, with Khan and Hocane paying heartfelt tributes to the cast and crew for their work. Director Saife Hasan and writer Umera Ahmed received special praise, as did Sania Saeed who played Tabish’s mother.
