The iconic Wembley Stadium in London had never hosted a Punjabi singer before — but that changed on Saturday night.

“Punjabi aa gaye oye! (Punjabis have arrived),” announced Indian superstar Diljit Dosanjh, as he brought one of the most popular genres of South Asian music to one of the world’s biggest stages.

Part of his Aura World Tour, the performance drew around 90,000 people, according to one of the videos posted to Instagram by Dosanjh’s team.

As if the event wasn’t magical enough, Dosanjh moved his fans with his powerful rendition of ‘Sanson Ki Mala Pe,’ a classic originally sung by the late Pakistani legendary artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Fans waved lights and sang along to Dosanjh’s soothing voice as Wembley — known for hosting memorable performances by Michael Jackson, Queen, Madonna, David Bowie and U2 — echoed with emotion.

Despite the fact that Dosanjh mainly sings in Punjabi, which is a major regional South Asian language, the 42-year-old Indian star shot to international fame by blending traditional folk music with modern hip-hop.

And Wembley wasn’t his first time writing history.

In 2023, Dosanjh became the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella. In June 2024, he made his debut on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Later that year in October, Dosanjh became the first South Asian artist to appear on the cover of Billboard Magazine.
