Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh postpones US show promoted by a Pakistani national

This comes after India's cine body Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) told him to cancel.
11 Sep, 2019

Earlier today, India's cine body, Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) asked singer and actor, Diljit Dosanjh to cancel his appearance at an upcoming show being promoted by a Pakistani national.

Diljit, who was supposed to perform at the US show on September 21 had been told to “cancel his commitment in the interest, sentiments and dignity of the nation”.

In another letter to the Ministry of External Affairs, FWICE requested that Diljit and his troupe’s visa should be cancelled, just in case he doesn’t cancel the tour.

The Udta Punjab actor took to his Twitter handle and issued a statement regarding the concert, writing that he's postponing the performance and that his contract was with a company called Shri Balaji Entertainment:

FWICE's chief advisor, Ashoke Pandit lauded Diljit for his decision:

A press release shared by FWICE stated, “FWICE is deeply concerned and anguished with our Artists/Singers/Dancers/Anchors and other Performers knowingly performing in Pakistan and Pak performers performing in India despite our strict warnings. We have also come to know from our reliable sources that our Performers in general and Actor, Saif Ali Khan and Singer, Shreya Ghoshal in particular are giving their performances in America at the behest of Mr. Rehan Siddiqi, a Pakistani National, who is also the promoter of the shows.”

It added, “We have just seen a poster of Artist/Singer Mr. Diljit Dosanjh who is giving his performance in a show organised by Mr. Rehan Siddiqi (a Pakistani National). We are also writing to him to cancel this commitment of his in the interest of sentiments & dignity of our Nation.”

The body further shared that they “have zero tolerance for such performers and condemn it as anti-national and unpatriotic bordering to treason with your own country” and that artists “not give priority to monetary considerations and refrain from being a part of any such project.”

Last month, singer Mika was banned by FWICE as well as AICWA (All India Cine Workers Association) for performing at a private event in Karachi, Pakistan. The ban was lifted after the singer publicly apologised at a press conference.

The cost of organizing such shows is tremendous and someone has to compensate for that .Rehan Siddiqi should Sue balaji for every penny that has been spent in organizing the show as well as inconvenience that has been caused. though balaji may be insured against that . then they should send an application to the state department to ban or deny visas of any artist that have renage on their prior commitment and has called harm to us economy and it's people. the Indians should understand that this is not India but USA. Pakistani artist who have signed contract with Indians to perform in USA should also think twice before signing these contracts with Indians who prove themselves to be unreliable on the stage of world.

Sikh community and population love Pakistan and we in Pakistan consider them as our brothers. Sikh being a minority in Hindu India is a sensitive topic. We know how Hindus are prejudice and hateful recognized in the world. So if some Sikh artists refuses to perform or participate in Pakistani functions is understood and accepted as their honest excuse.

Diljit should have the courage to speak out against the cruelty being dished out to Kashmiris - in his videos he comes across fearless and just - but reality is a different story altogether... Him living in Punjab and so close to Kashmir - he knows exactly what is going on yet doesn’t speak up - shame.

That is pure intimidation by FWICE. I can't believe they are a federation for cine employees. They should be the ones standing up for artists who wants to build the bridge of peace by moving their talent across borders. Only art and cultural exchange can eliminate the hatred of selected few from both sides.

Oh so now these cheap "nationalistic" hindus are taking this route. Rehan Siddiqui is a friend of mine. He is a US citizen, has been a US citizen for many decades. The most neutral guy I have ever met. He treats everybody with respect irrespective of their nationality. He is one of the biggest promoter of these events. The Pakistanis are NOT just any minority in the South. When they start boycotting Indian goods in the grocery stores, you will notice in India. I think Pakistanis should do this. Overflights banned in Pakistan, product ban in US and Europe, bad days are approaching.

Why so much hatred toward Pakistanis? I don't understand this degenerative mindset of Indians. Ok, so you have a problem with Pakistani government or military. Does this mean, you need to hate each and every Pakistani, including anyone living abroad? Pakistanis and Indians generally live in peace and harmony outside of Subcontinent. Please do not try and poison the atmosphere outside of your cesspool of hatred and bigotry.

Ultimately burden comes on singer not on the govt. and such great performers face the criticism. To be honest, Diljit is my favorite actor in Punjabi cinema, movies like jut and juliet, Punjab 1984,
