A sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is in the works with Kate Hudson as producer
Fans of early-2000s romcoms rejoice! The classic 2003 romance How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is set to get a sequel with lead actor Kate Hudson sitting in the producer’s chair — and maybe even reprising her original role.
Variety reported filmmaking giant Paramount is working on the sequel, with development in its early stages, according to a source close to the project.
While the cast and several creative roles have yet to be filled — including its screenwriter — the report said filmmakers were looking to have Hudson and her co-star Matthew McConaughey reprise their roles.
Stacey Sher will be producing the film alongside Hudson. The experienced producer has credits on several big name titles, such as Pulp Fiction, Erin Brockovich and Django Unchained.
Still in early stages of development, there are no details available on the sequel’s plot, which Variety says is being ironed out.
The 2003 original followed magazine columnist Andie Anderson (Hudson) conducting ‘research’ for an article on modern dating. The idea being that she would enter a relationship with someone, then transform into a nightmare of a girlfriend in an attempt to lose her partner in 10 days.
Enter advertising executive — and all-around dude-bro — Benjamin Barry (McConaughey), Anderson’s hapless victim. What she doesn’t know, however, is that he’s bet his boss he can make any woman fall for him in 10 days.
Naturally, the opposing agendas collide and the two end up actually falling in love. The film is widely considered a definitive title in its genre, with McConaughey recently describing it as an “anchor” in the romcom canon.
The actor — whom we’re hoping to see in the sequel — has been absent from the genre he was once closely associated with for well over a decade.
He pivoted to critical dramas in the 2010s, starring in Interstellar, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club — which won him a Best Actor Oscar in 2014.
Hudson was recently nominated for an Academy Award — her second nod — for her role in Song Sung Blue. She is also starring in the Netflix sports comedy Running Point.
McConaughey meanwhile returned to the silver screen last year with The Rivals of Azmiah King after a six-year hiatus.
