Five films we think you should watch this Valentine’s Day weekend

If you don't have plans, just grab some popcorn and put on one of these classics.

There are two types of people on Valentine’s Day: those who have plans and literally everyone else. For the second group — and anyone whose plan was to stay in and watch a movie — we’ve gathered five films that are sure to make you feel something.

For Bollywood enthusiasts: Jab We Met

It seems every generation has their Bollywood romance. The baby boomers had Mughal-e-Azam, the millennials had films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Gen-Z has Jab We Met, a cross-country love story about a guy and girl who meet on a train.

While the story sounds basic enough, Kareena Kapoor’s acting as the energetic and bubbly Geet is absolutely iconic and Shahid Kapoor defined the brooding nerd character in his role as Aditya. You really can’t go wrong with this one.

For the Millennials: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Ask anyone who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s and they’ll tell you about the golden age of the romcom. Coming from right in the middle of that era, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days stars Kate Hudson as a magazine columnist and Matthew McConaughey as an advertising executive.

Neither is trying to get into an actual relationship and Andie (Hudson’s character) is actively trying to drive Ben (McConaughey) away as part of her research for an article. But, as is often the case with films from the time, they do end up living happily ever after in a sappy, feelgood ending kind of way.

For anime fans: Your Name

The most recent film on our list, the critically acclaimed Your Name is the first of Makoto Shinkai’s Disaster trilogy. It isn’t your average romance though, instead relying on time travel and body swapping as essential tropes in its tragic tale.

That’s really all we can say without giving away the plot, but the film was the highest grossing Japanese film of all time until it was overtaken by the new Demon Slayer movies in 2020 and 2025.

For old souls: Roman Holiday

This 1953 romcom won an Oscar for Best Story and leading lady Audrey Hepburn won another for Best Actress in her role as Princess Ann, the heir to an unnamed country’s throne who just wants a day to herself.

The film was a beloved classic of its time for anyone looking for a trip back to a time before CGI and AI-generated content took over the world.

For the ones who really want to feel something: Me Before You

Fair warning, this film will make you cry. The story follows Lou Clark (Emilia Clarke) as the spirited caretaker for the cynical and depressed tetraplegic Will Traynor (Sam Claflin).

While initially cold, Traynor eventually warms up to Clark and they end up falling in love. We’ll let you find out why it’s such a tear-jerker.

This list was compiled with input from the team here at Dawn.com, but it definitely needs more names. Leave your recommendations in the comments and we’ll be going through them to find something to watch ourselves.
