Changes in a woman's body aren't an invitation for public commentary, says Naimal Khawar

The artist reshared a post talking about her weight, reflecting on how comfortable people have become commenting on a woman's body.

Actor and artist Naimal Khawar doesn’t understand why people feel so empowered to talk about a woman’s body.

In an Instagram story shared on Saturday, she reshared a post claiming she looked ‘unrecognisable’ at a wedding, speculating whether she was pregnant or had just gained weight.

“It’s honestly fascinating and sad how comfortable people have become commenting on a woman’s body. Yes, my weight can fluctuate. Yes, I don’t look the same as I did five years ago. Yes, motherhood changes you in ways you can’t imagine,” she wrote.

Khawar, who is married to actor Hamza Ali Abbasi, gave birth to a baby boy in 2020. She has spoken publicly about the emotional toll postpartum blues took on her and how she wasn’t able to paint for three years because of it.

“Women’s bodies change with age, hormones, stress, health, lifestyle, and yes, sometimes pregnancy too,” Khawar wrote. “None of these things are invitations for public commentary. And to the women reading this: you don’t owe anyone the same body you had five years ago, last year, or even last month. Your body is allowed to change without becoming a topic of entertainment.”

The commentary on Khawar’s body is nothing new — Pakistani entertainment pages and netizens love commenting on a woman’s body, especially if she’s in the spotlight. They’ve been known to comment on women’s hair, faces, noses, weight, clothes, the possibility of plastic surgery (of which they are firm believers that every female celebrity has had), and everything in between.

This preoccupation with women’s bodies often comes from a sense of entitlement over female celebrities and a staunch belief that being in the public eye means being subject to degrading criticism. Most male actors are, of course, not subject to the same scrutiny.

As Khawar said, changes in a woman’s body are not an invitation for public commentary. If only the Pakistani internet would figure that out.

Natural phenomena may not be criticized or may not be given such importance. In case anyone in their interview criticizes body shape, may not be responded to lessen importance of criticism.

All individuals retain an absolute right to bodily autonomy and privacy. Consequently, any commentary, comparison, or evaluation regarding a person's physical appearance, figure, or physique!! whether positive, negative, or tracking historical personal changes; is strictly inappropriate. Every individual's body remains exclusively their own concern. Mind ur own body!!!

Whenever a picture appears of a popular and known woman in media, everybody observing, naturally reacts on observations and when asked for comments, takes some time to write his observations. It is just normal reaction and depends upon the personal liking, or otherwise of the person.

Public figure actress and picture posting on public platforms for applause only? gains Millions followers then brand promotions ude to these M followers but when they point out something odd ... then ego hurts? Please stay at home or make things private. This is the level of insecurity of these public figures.

Being a celebrity, you choose to live in the public eye. But when the public starts commenting, you feel violated. You can’t really have it both ways. That said, not every comment is meant to offend. There are well-wishers too—some who are genuinely happy for you, and others who are simply concerned.

you are public figure so public would do it. no matter what you say or think. You should have kept yourself private so nobody could interfere in your life or looks. Since you are a public figure, so this will happen. So do not make an issue out of it. Do not cry foul. And do not shed crocodile tears.

If you don't want comments on your body then don't display it in the public domain. Wear a burka! Once you come into the public domain then don't complain because people will comment.

While the public is entitled to its opinion regarding actors and actresses, it should be restricted to the person’s performance in such acts and productions, not their body weight or personal life choices.

No it isnt. If you're a public figure , you put yourself out to be shown to the world. People will comment and have every right to do so. This is social media.

She was once a beauty but now seems over made up due to insecurities. Her weight is nobody's business though.

Half of them are stupid and the rest are without any work, so what better way then to comment on female's body part. I love these jerkos who forgets to look at their Mum and Sisters before commenting on others.

You disclose yourself everybody starts talking you dont disclose yourself ie remain in burkhas the world esp the wild wild west starts talking, so whether you do it or not you should not really care cause people have the habit of talking. It wojld actually be a self fulfilling prophecy to keep gaze down for everyone man and woman and there won't be much of a problem. We create our own illusions, delusions and before resting become someone elses before we know it.
