The sea calls Moana of Motunui to adventure once more as Disney releases the trailer for the live-action adaptation of its critically acclaimed 2016 film Moana with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson back as everyone’s favourite ocean demigod.

Starring Catherine Lagaʻaia in the titular role as the daughter of a Polynesian chieftain, the trailer shows some of the animated film’s most iconic scenes recreated in stunning, realistic visuals and features a snippet from what was arguably the most recognisable song in the film, Auli’i Cravalho’s ‘How Far I’ll Go’.

If you haven’t seen the film, Moana is the story of a young girl who follows her calling to return the heart of Te Fiti, a living island deity, to save her people. So, she sets off to find Maui (Johnson), a shape-shifting demigod who stole the heart and then lost it — Moana’s grandmother was entrusted with the heart by the ocean, but it must be returned by Maui.

Together, the two face a series of monsters including a giant crab and the volcanic demon Te Kā — both shown in crisp high definition in the trailer. There’s also Heihei the dim-witted chicken, but we’ll leave you to discover that part of the film on your own.

The film is set for a theatrical release on July 10 and is directed by Thomas Kail, the Tony and Emmy winning force behind Hamilton. Johnson is one of the film’s producers alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote part of the film’s score.

Moana is one of a number of major family film releases from Disney this year, with the animal adventure Hoppers currently playing in theatres and the fifth instalment in the Toy Story franchise set to release on June 19.

The studio has also announced a series of big releases running into the next couple of years, with Frozen, Lilo & Stitch and The Incredibles set to get new movies between November 2027 and June 2028.
