Comedian Tabish Hashmi believes the citizens of Karachi could do a better job running the city

Let's privatise the city and hand it over to the people who live in it, he said during a recent talkshow.

Comedian and actor Tabish Hashmi wants Karachi’s management to be privatised and handed over to the citizens of this city, because even if they try, the standard can’t be worse than it already is — and RJ Anoushey Ashraf agrees.

While analysing the Gul Plaza fire on a Geo talkshow, Report Card, an exasperated Hashmi said the city should be run as a unified power by communities residing in Karachi instead of the government.

“The way the government realised that they can’t run PIA and privatised it, please privatise Karachi the same way. We Karachiites, Pathan, Baloch, Sindhi, Muhajirs, all Punjabis that are here, we will buy Karachi together. If this is the criterion and standard of running Karachi, then we will do it. We might even run it better, because even despite trying, we won’t be able to do a worse job than this.”

During the show, the actor spoke about various spaces that hold significance in the hearts and memories of many Karachiites, spaces that are now in ruins. One of those places is Gul Plaza.

“There likely isn’t a house in Karachi that doesn’t have items from Gul Plaza in it,” he said about the shopping mall struck by a devastating fire last week, killing 61 people.

He said people keep reaching out to him to make videos about the persistent issues of Karachi, but he never does because it is not his job to tell people in positions of power what’s wrong with the city.

“When I make a video of course, I would be addressing the government or various political parties. But if I am telling these people about such big issues, then maybe this job is not for them, because they should already know what is wrong.

“Having these conversations in 2026, that there were no exits [at Gul Plaza], there was no proper system to evacuate, who is supposed to ensure that?” he asked.

For the Hasna Mana Hai host, only taking accountability is not the correct response to a situation this devastating. Incidents like this, he said, were not isolated ones. He spoke of a number of incidents — such as various buildings catching fire and children being killed by speeding trucks — and suggested mass resignations by those in power, and Karachiites taking over instead.

“I saw the chief minister’s press conference, where he accepted that he is accountable, and said he will conduct an inquiry. Accountability doesn’t happen by just saying ‘I am accountable’,” the enraged comedian stated.

“Accountability is a process […] if there are constant incidents taking place under you, then just resign.”

Hashmi also asked Karachiites to look inwards and focus on doing their part first to keep the city intact, so that they truly have the liberty to blame the authorities when things go wrong.

“I also want to be introspective as a citizen of Karachi. […] There are houses built on stormwater drains. Why? Why have you made them? Expanding land into alleyways, who has done it? Citizens have done it. Why have you expanded them? Make them smaller! Remove your houses from these drains. Stop stealing electricity. Then ask questions with full liberty,” he said.

RJ and host Ashraf agreed. Sharing Hashmi’s clip on Instagram, she said Karachi is its own entity.

“It should be run and ruled and cared for by ‘Karachiites’ whether they are Memon, Shia, Sunni, Hindu, Parsi, Punjabi, Sindhi or French. If you made this city your home, you cannot complain if you aren’t actively trying to make it better,” she said, echoing Hashmi’s statement.

“In for ‘all Karachi party’ away from the mean and insulting ways the government treats us. Enough,” she wrote in an Instagram story.

While celebrities come up with various solutions to fix the situation of this city, the larger question remains: is this it, or will it take many more tragedies for someone to take charge?

Handed to the citizens of Karachi?? Are not the CM and the Mayor citizens too?? Someone has to be incharge of running the show, a leader or elected official from the citizens - and that is the Mayor. Or did you mean all 18 million should meet and make decisions on every matter, every day?? Where would they meet - in the Desert??

Tabish Hashmi is right. Pleople living in Karachi can do far more better job than the present sitting provincial government of PPP. Whether it is a dilapidated road any where in Karachi or a manhole cover, stray dogs biting to walking citizens or children, street lights of any area, water in the main pipe lines, controlling law and order situstion, provincial governments hospitals, cleaning of waste from the sides of the roads, what is being done perfectly and according to the requirements of people living in Karachi. Karachiites are only suppose to pay the required taxes on time but in lieu of get nothing. The January 17, 2025 incident of fire at Gul Plaza in which uncounted people have died and deribs are still being cleaned by the fire fighters is itself a verdict against the provincial government of PPP. People of Karachi are sick and tired of PPP government and want a complete change. The only perfect thing which is going on is corruption in all provincial departments running under the nose of PPP government and there is no body who can eradicate the menace of corruprion from Karachi. PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto introduced quota system for people living in Sindh for ten years and even after fifty years the quota system is still imposed in Sindh province in which people who are permanent residents of Karachi being residents of Urban area were entitled for 40% and people who are residing in Rural areas of Sindh are entitle for 60% of the quota in provincial government job. Since the Urban / Rural quota is introduced in Sindh not a single Karachiite got any job in any of the Sindh government department. All ministers of Sindh government are corrupt as they go their offices to get monthly salaries and for doing any legitimate job these ministers take hefty bribes. As regards to the examination of Sindh Public Service Commission is concerned no cadidate holding Karachi domicile have ever been declared passed in the examination. People living in Karachi have lost hope that their children would ever be able to make their future while the PPP goverment in Sindh will be running the affairs of Karachi.

Stupidest idea I ever heard! Thanks for the laughs. Now, name one city in the world, which is being run by its citizens, instead of an elected Municipality or the Mayor?

First, CM is the rep of Sindh and Mayor credentials/ election is dubious. Second, inhabitants of Karachi never actually had their say but controlled/ abused by one pressure group or the other

Karachi was and is a beautiful city and I love this city. The provincial government is not taking care of this Metropolitan city that it deserves. Building codes should be strictly adhered to. Here are some of my suggestions: 1. High rises should have sprinkler systems. 2. Depending on the population of the area should have Fire stations. 3. Every mall should have water supply system that is available for the fire fighters. 4. Exits in the building should be posted in areas for public awareness. 5. Sirens should only be used in emergency cases. 6. Educate people to give space to emergency vehicles. 7. Garbage pickup in all areas. 8. Empowering the local government to take local action. etc. etc.

Hindus, Christians and Parsis have developed and looked after very well. It is too late for them to do the same because not many left either forcefully evicted or converted. Only people who build Karachi know how to look after it. Can we give an example of city or town that is being managed satisfactorily in Pakistan - none!

The problem in Pakistan is that public servants are treated as VIP & public is treated as accountable. If this is changed things will fall into perspective.

If everyone throws trash around, no city administration can clean the city we have a habit of complaining and asking for the government to do everything, but not take responsibility ourselves speeding. The only reason western countries are clean is because their citizens keep it clean.
