Chaos reigns in the trailer for teen drama Euphoria’s third season
Four years after the dramatic ending of the show’s second season, HBO’s Euphoria is finally returning with its third on April 12.
The season’s trailer, which released on Wednesday, had a lot of familiar faces and some new ones in a series of high-stakes situations from weddings to vendettas. The show was renewed for a new season in 2022, but a series of delays pushed the release to this year.
The trailer sets the stage “a few years after high school” — five years, according to series creator Sam Levinson — with all the characters out of high school and living starkly different lives.
Rue (Zendaya) is now based in Mexico, returning to God and trying to pay off her debts to drug kingpin Laurie (Martha Kelly) — we can’t say what this means about her staying sober past high school.
Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sidney Sweeney) are getting married, which has its issues now that Cassie is making adult content for social media, and, in Levinson’s words, “envious of what appear to be the big lives that all of her high school classmates are living at this point in time”.
The creator also said Jules (Hunter Schafer) will be going to art school and doing her best to avoid responsibility, Maddie (Alexa Demi) will be working for a talent agency in Hollywood and Lexi (Maude Apatow) will be an assistant to a show runner played by Sharon Stone — a fitting job after last season’s play.
Season 3 will place the characters “out of the safety net of high school”.
“The one thing we all agreed on is we can’t go back to high school — although many, many shows have had 30-year-old high school students,” Levinson said. “Five years felt like a natural place [to jump] because if they had gone to college they’d be out of college at that time.”
New cast members this season include Danielle Deadwyler, Eli Roth, Natasha Lyonne, Rosalía, Marshawn Lynch, Sam Trammell and Asante Blackk, to name a few.
Storm Reid, Barbie Ferreira and Austin Abrams will not be returning to the show, neither will Javon Walton — whose character, Ashtray, was killed off in season two. Fan favourite Fezco (Angus Cloud) will also not be returning after Cloud passed away in July 2023.
