Meghan Markle is reportedly returning to acting eight years after leaving Suits
Meghan Markle may be stepping back into the spotlight, but this time, it’s not in a royal documentary or a lifestyle series. According to Deadline, the Duchess of Sussex has taken a role in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film Close Personal Friends, marking her first acting credit since she left Suits in 2017.
Though the studio hasn’t confirmed the news and Amazon declined to comment when asked, multiple outlets in the US reported that Markle has already been seen on set in Pasadena. The details of her role are still under wraps, though reports suggest she may be playing a version of herself. The film features a star-studded cast including Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, and Henry Golding.
Markle famously exited Suits after seven seasons, announcing her departure in November 2017. Months later, she married Britain’s Prince Harry in 2018 and stepped into royal life, later stepping back from it in 2020. Since then, her public-facing projects have mostly been through media production company Archewell, which she runs with her husband.
Her last on-screen venture was With Love, Meghan, a Netflix cooking and lifestyle series. Though the show drew curiosity in its debut, its second season struggled to gain viewership momentum.
This isn’t the first time talk of Markle revisiting her acting roots has surfaced. In a 2019 interview, Suits creator Aaron Korsh revealed that he briefly considered asking her to return for the show’s final season.
“I thought about asking, and I thought about even using audio footage that we have to come up with something,” he told Deadline. “In the end I didn’t ask…I’m going to respect her new life and not put her in the position of having to ask.”
He added that the Suits LA spinoff wouldn’t have made a natural fit for her character, even if the conversation had come up.
No release date for the film has been announced yet.
