Zhalay Sarhadi wants city-wise animal welfare response teams for injured and targeted strays

The actor called on authorities to take responsibility and appealed to her followers for solutions to Pakistan’s ongoing animal welfare crisis.

Actor Zhalay Sarhadi is using her social media account to highlight an issue many Pakistanis witness daily but often feel helpless about — the lack of emergency response systems for injured and stray animals.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Sarhadi wrote that “there needs to be an animal welfare response team set up for each city”, noting how often road accidents leave animals suffering on the streets without immediate help.

She pointed out that while animal welfare groups and rescues do their best, they can only operate within the limits of the donations they receive. “Animal welfares and rescues can only do as much as the money they have donated to them,” she said, highlighting the resource gap many non-profits face.

The actor also highlighted the uncertainty over which government department should be held accountable, adding that “some of them are engaged in dog culling, which is against what I am stating here”.

Sarhadi invited her followers to reach out with suggestions, writing, “If anyone has an answer or solution, please DM. #saveanimals.”

In Pakistan, stray animals are often targeted with mass culling and poisoning, including by ‘concerned’ neighbours and systemically by various city departments under the guise of “keeping the streets safe for pedestrians”.

We desperately need a structured, humane system for animal rescue and welfare, one that prioritises compassion and accountability over neglect and culling.

A good idea, but can we first take care of the people before looking after animals.

Stray dogs and cats in the all big cities of Pakistan need to be eliminated and protected for the safety of people and animals.

Great effort by the writer, Ms. Sarhadi! In Pakistan it’s a wishful thought to ask government to provide solutions for this issue, and take any steps to combat animal cruelty. Citizen funded animal welfare organizations that operate in Pakistan should make education as part of their mission. It should start at the elementary school level. Education on animal welfare should be just as important as learning to count.

Really?? She's concerned about he lack of emergency response systems for injured and stray animals. Which planet are you from?? People of Karachi get robbed, deprived of their valuables, autos, their dignity, gunned downed in cold-blood every day. Yet not enough security measures employed due to lack of (manpower, money, intelligence, or grey matter with the PPP government) to save your or my lives. In fact, no one can guarantee a live once you step out of your home in Karachi. And you expect a dedicated Police Response Team with high-powered ambulances, equipment and housing to rescue injured stray dogs and cats?? Ok, I want to redesign the White House to look more like My House. You'll all be invited once it is done.

And the reason 50% of the kids in this country cannot go to school, is due to poverty and lack of free public education. The reason people of Morrocco rose up recently, to highlight the lack of health care facilities in their country, due to lack of funding, which left a dozen patients to die in the city of Agadir, due to poor planning, lack of resources and misplaced priorities. Get your priorities straight. A human life is more valuable than a stray cat's.

If I was an actor, I would be more concerned about making a living and paying the bills. AI is replacing many jobs, including models, actors, singers and designers. Deepfakes and Virtual Actors: AI-powered technologies like deepfake software can create highly realistic digital replicas of an actor’s face and voice. Don't worry about stray animals. But start leaning new skills to survive.

Animal welfare is good but the helpless, feeble, weak, trifle, homeless, foodless, shelter less and the hapless human beings also need care, support, concern and attention.

Animal protection is very important as it should be. Having said that, today due to negligence of government animal protection bureaus and animal right NGOs, stray animals headcount has grown tremendously all over Pakistan. Dog bites have increased with many dogs and cats infected with active rabies virus, which on and off, results in short supply of Rabies vaccination in all major hospitals across Pakistan. Government and NGOs have adequate funding, both local and from international donors, but it is unmonitored and limited/unethical utilization of these funds which is a problem. I think I am very clear here what I mean. Of course, if these animals which multiply very quickly, are left on the streets, they unfortunately get hit, injured or killed on the roads by vehicles unintentionally. In many cases, to keep their families safe, people take it upon themselves to eliminate them. To avoid all the issues, government and NGOs need to work together and develop shelters for unwanted animals and feed them. Other options include neutering them at the shelters so managing them remains possible, else the cost can escalate exponentially. It is important to keep both people and animals safe, but if animal rights organisations and government do not act now, leaving these stary animals on streets may become very costly with both financial, health and safety repercussions.
