Tired of walking 10,000 steps a day? A new study says 7,000 is just as good

A paper published last month says the step count everyone tells us we need to be achieving might be over-exaggerated.

Ten thousand steps a day is an ambitious goal and in order to achieve it you need to put in a lot of legwork, especially if you aren’t someone who has to walk around a lot as part of their daily routine. Good news if you’re not someone who has been able to reach that goal easily — a new study published last month in the Lancet Public Health medical journal says just 7,000 steps a day might be enough to cause noticeable improvements in health and wellbeing.

The study, conducted by researchers from Australia, Spain and the UK, reviewed past papers for correlation between levels of exercise and risk factors of various ailments such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, depressive symptoms and dementia.

Taking a baseline of 2,000 steps, which is something most adults manage even without taking extra time to exercise, the study compared the reduction in rates of disease incidence. The findings indicate that those who walk 7,000 steps are 47 per cent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease and 37pc less likely to die of cancer. The same group has a 25pc lesser chance of developing cardiovascular disease in the first place and a 14pc lower risk of diabetes.

Compared to this, those who completed their 10,000 steps were only marginally less likely to develop these diseases, the differences being in single digits. The study even found that the more active group was very slightly more prone to dying from cardiovascular disease.

On the mental health front, the study found those who exercise had a 38pc lower chance of exhibiting depressive symptoms and a 22pc less chance of developing dementia. They also found that the 7,000-step group had better balance and coordination, being 28pc less likely to suffer falls; this number went down for those walking over 10,000 steps a day.

Another 2019 study by Japanese and US researchers found a similar peak benefit point at 7,500 steps; the same paper said walking backwards was more beneficial for cognitive ability and coordination. A 2011 paper from the University of Nevada backed up the correlation between brain health and backward retro walking; it also said walking backwards strengthens hamstrings and reduces pain in the lower back.

To keep healthy ourselves we need to remain physically active. Daily walk is the most important and easy task to do in order to avoid having Cardiovascular and other diseases like cancer, depression and dementia. According to a new study just published and mentioned in the above article that those who walk 7,000 steps are 47 per cent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease and 37pc less likely to die of cancer. Therefore, we must need to modify our current sedentary lifestyle into an active Lifestyle by engaging ourselves in health activities like regular daily walk, eating healthy food like low fat, sugar and high fiber diet, smoking cessation, relaxation exercises and spend more time with nature.

10k isn't always feasible especially for those working in sitting positions. But it's also not impossible. At the end of today chose a mode of cardio that works for you. Running, walking, treadmill etc. Exercise is important. Karachites have the added facility of swimming in the only free ocean in Pakistan but don't bother learning. Just walking on the beach or in ankle/calf high water. Many common health conditions can be avoided with daily moderate exercise. Sadly too many Pakistanis are lazy. Always looking for shirt cuts or ways with little or no effort.

**Daily 7,000 Steps: A Lifeline for Middle-Aged Adults** For middle-aged individuals, walking 7,000 steps a day is not just exercise—it’s a life-affirming habit. Scientific studies show that consistently walking 7,000 steps daily reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even premature death. Unlike high-intensity workouts that can strain joints or require gym time, walking is gentle, accessible, and sustainable. It boosts mood, supports weight management, and sharpens mental focus. Midlife often brings stress, fatigue, and sedentary routines—walking offers a simple way to reclaim energy and vitality. Whether it’s a brisk walk in the park, a stroll after dinner, or pacing at work, these steps accumulate meaningful health gains. The beauty lies in its consistency: no fancy gear, no rigid schedules—just movement. By building this into daily life, one invests in longevity, joint health, and emotional well-being. Start small, stay steady, and remember—7,000 steps a day is a proven step toward a healthier, stronger midlife and beyond.

Some people think old age means you just don't move but become dependent on others. Old age simply means you slow down but you still use your body. Staying fresh and active results in a healthier old age too. In the West people stay active in their 70s and 80s, still walking, doing gardening, going out etc. In Pakistan people in 40/50s behave as if they are old and helpless. So exercise for your own health and to take care of your body.

This is a wrong interpretation and bad advice. The study doesn't say it is just as good. Walking has benefits at 7k steps, that does not mean it is just as good as 12k steps. It's the bare minimum for a healthy lifestyle. If you look at the graphs it shows how going from 7k to 12k steps lowers the Hazard ratio (HR) by 20 percent. As the number of steps increases, the HR continues to lower.

@Nazir Sheikh I don't know where you get those figures from but I don't find expert support for those numbers. Young people children and late teens can benefit from 15-16k steps daily as they are naturally more active. Adults from 18- 60 should take 10k steps. After 60 between 6-8k steps is advisable, give and take, depending on individual health conditions and risks. Numbers below that are either sedentary or detrimental. Pakistanis need to stop thinking of old age as paralysis or inability. Old age does not mean you can't live a healthy, active life. Look at old people in other nations including China, Europe and Middle East, who lead long and active lives. In Pakistan middle age like 50s is considered retirement age and people want to be waited on by daughters in law hand and foot. Many old people continue leisurely activities and even work instead of retiring. Unfortunately Pakistani culture makes people think anybody above 40/50 is old and can not do much. You are supposed to stay active, move around and do whatever you are able to for as long as you can. An active mind and body ensures a healthy and long life. If you have smokers lungs, risk of heart issues, are in a wheel chair, had a stroke etc then you should natural consult your doctor. But otherwise healthy people irrespective of age should stay active and use their body to the fullest. This nation is lazy as it is. No muscle tone in young adults especially males and people think it's normal. Pakistanis are always looking for excuses to do as little to no effort as possible and taking short cuts. Our health can't afford shortcuts.
