Going Loco for Local: Lo-Kal Bites’ chocolate mousse is a deliciously guilt-free indulgence
If you’ve ever eaten sugar and gluten-free desserts, you would know that they might be some of the most atrocious food you’ve put in your mouth. Chalky, bitter and an unpleasant aftertaste are common parts of the experience. However, I’m here to change that for you.
Lo-Kal Bites is upping the sugar and gluten-free dessert game, but it’s their chocolate mousse that will leave you wanting more. So, so much more.
My editor told me about the dessert and I simply couldn’t stay away — no sugar, no gluten and it was chocolatey? It sounded too good to be true. As someone who has been on her fair share of diets (shoutout Keto), I was apprehensive at first. Would the mousse have the terrible stevia-esque aftertaste? Would it be bitter and grainy? Would the serving be all of two bites big?
All my fears were thwarted with the first, tentative spoonful. It was pure chocolate indulgence. Lo-Kal Bites’ chocolate mousse was rich, smooth, creamy — just dreamy. The best part? It tasted perfectly normal. There was no weird aftertaste that usually accompanies artificial sweeteners.
Light yet decadent, each spoonful is irresistible, especially if you follow the mentioned instructions and put it in the freezer for 30 minutes before devouring it. It’s like eating a silky chocolate cloud — creamy and packed with that deep, rich chocolate goodness. A cold, chocolatey embrace for your taste buds.
It was so good that my parents were sceptical if the dessert was actually sugar-free and repeatedly asked if I was sure, because the mousse was just that good. Despite their concerns, they scarfed an entire cup of mousse down.
“Beta,” they said, “This is so good!”
I had to order a second serving for myself because they left absolutely nothing for me. Which brings me to the second order of business — the size. When it comes to dessert, size does matter (if not as much as taste). And this mousse is a good size! It comes in a standard plastic drink cup and is filled almost all the way up. The cup from heaven is also topped off with some chocolate shavings.
If you’re not in the mood for too much dessert (what on earth is wrong with you?!) you could get the smaller size instead. I ordered from Foodpanda, which doesn’t specify the size, but I believe I had the large cup.
The large cup retails for Rs600 and the small is for Rs350. The prices are pretty decent in my opinion, because gluten and sugar-free desserts usually require special ingredients and therefore cost an arm and a leg.
Lo-Kal Bites delivers across Karachi and Lahore. You can call them or message their Instagram. They use monk fruit sweetener for this mousse, making it the perfect treat for people with celiac disease, diabetes, and the health conscious nuts in your life. Everyone can enjoy this mousse, guilt-free!
I’m rating it 5/5 because what’s there to not love?! Just thinking about it brings a smile to my face, and I can’t wait to go home and order another one.
