Philanthropist Chhipa appeals to distraught American woman’s Pakistani ‘husband’ to meet her

Onijah Robinson came to Karachi in October to meet a 19-year-old she befriended online and has since refused to leave the country.

Philanthropist and social worker Ramzan Chhipa is requesting a young Pakistani man to visit an American woman claiming to be his wife, in efforts to resolve a matter that has taken the media, both social and traditional, by storm.

Onijah Robinson, a 33-year-old American citizen, arrived in Karachi in October to meet Nidal Ahmed Memon, 19, who later abandoned her, saying his family did not agree to their marriage. His whereabouts are currently unknown, according to Arab News.

Robinson befriended Memon online and allegedly left her family in the United States to be with him. The entire situation was brought to the public’s notice after Jafriya Disaster Management Cell Welfare Organisation (JDC) founder Zaffar Abbas posted about it on social media. Subsequently, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori intervened to extend her expired visa and arrange a flight home.

According to Arab News, however, Robinson refused to return home, SHO Kaleem Khan Moosa said. She instead took a taxi to Memon’s apartment building and stayed in its parking lot for nearly 30 hours on Thursday before leaving for a Chhipa charity shelter, where she is expected to remain until her return to the US.

In a press conference on Friday, Chhipa urged Memon to come to his charity’s headquarters to meet with the woman and resolve the issue as soon as possible.

“She left her home and family because of the boy, so if the family or the boy are listening, please come immediately and I will help you resolve this issue. Ask for forgiveness, regardless of the matter. You can only resolve things by talking to her,” the philanthropist pled.

He said that he and every Pakistani, especially women, hoped that the matter was wrapped up respectfully and that Robinson returned to her home and children.

Chhipa added that her mental state was fragile and that she kept saying different things every five minutes, and repeatedly insisted on meeting her “husband”.

It is unclear if Robinson and Memon are actually married.

During the press conference, Robinson said she wanted to “fix up” and “reconstruct” the Chhipa building before getting up and claiming she was going to meet her husband.

When a reporter asked what her plan was, she retorted, “It’s none of your business.”

“My plan is to reconstruct this whole country. I am asking for $100k, [and] I need $20k by this week in my pocket in cash. That’s a demand to this government. The government is going to fix up these streets […] It’s ridiculous out here. I do not like it. I need you guys to understand that Pakistan is in need of new buses, cabs, cars. Please listen to what I’m saying, my name is Onijah Ahmed.”

When Chhipa started to tell media personnel that they found out about Robinson, their “American sister”, through the Tipu Sultan police, she interjected that she was from Pakistan.

“Respect to the law, respect for the law, respect for Allah and respect for God. Do you hear me?” Robinson said.

Chhipa attempted to continue the press conference, stating that he was troubled by her state as she roamed the streets of Karachi and was distraught.

Robinson stopped him again and hoped he was saying the “right thing”.

“Pakistan needs to be reconstructed the right way. I am married to Nidal Ahmed, I am Onijah Ahmed. We will move to Dubai soon and have our babies in Dubai,” she said, and she proceeded to list her American family members with whom she would be shifting to the UAE.

“They [her family] will be rich. This city will be reconstructed and fixed right away. I am asking the government for $100k, I will do real estate and my husband will own it in Karachi. We will not live here but we will get this done.” Robinson clarified that the amount would go back into the city, not into her pocket, before adding that she wanted $20,000 for herself.

When asked if she would stay in Pakistan or go back to the United States, she reiterated that she would take them to Dubai. Another reporter questioned where her family was, to which Robinson said it was a private matter and against her religion — Islam — to divulge the information.

After the press conference concluded, Robinson told reporters that she came to “fix” the charity but might “shut it down”. “But I am not going to do that. I am going to fix it up, and put a new owner owner in place. Lock him [Chhipa] up.”

Robinson’s videos have made rounds on social media with many questioning her mental state.

Earlier this week, Onijah staged a sit-in outside Memon’s apartment building, prompting the administration to lock the flat’s doors, Geo News reported. Shortly after, strangers gathered in the area to see the American woman.

When Geo asked why she wasn’t leaving, she said: “If y’all dropping no bread by next week, I think I should leave.”

Clifton SPO Faiza Sodhar met with Robinson and transferred her to a women’s police station. The police said she required security, and her mental state also appeared unstable, according to the TV channel.

However, upon her insistence, she was later sent back to the Garden area.

They quoted police sources claiming that Memon had been taken into custody by intelligence agencies four days ago, while his family had already vacated their residence.

There is no fair solution except the marriage of this couple that was reportedly obstructed by the family of the boy. Also other men and women should learn from this story that the world has become a global village. They should not make commitments if they cannot honour them. In this case the boy should have talked to his family before inviting this lady to come over and get married.

Looks like she is dealing with mental health issues. She may even have a history of drug abuse. All these aspects need to be investigated and the woman treated with compassion. I wonder where is the US embassy in all this scenario.

@Shaista The prospective groom is missing. He sure wasn't worried about the age difference when flirting and befriending her online and making heaven only knows what promises. But when he has to man up, he hides like the little pathetic coward he is. His picture should be everywhere. So other girls families can be aware and avoid this boy.

@AmjadKhan Clearly you don't know what a gold digger is. She isn't married to anybody rich so what gold is she digging exactly? Pakistan is no goldmine. Anybody living her who isnt rich, elite or upper middle class can confirm that. Her mental state is not good. I am more concerned we will witness a full-blown breakdown. The boy must be brought forward on national TV and confronted. He and his family should pay the costs for her returning home where she can get proper medical care.

@Gulabo Yes, but sadly the boy is no man. That's why dum duba ka chup gaya ha. He will never be a man otherwise he would come forward, apologize and take responsibility for his actions. Marriage can't be forced. But flirting and befriending females online is also not allowed.

We are sure, his parents failed to raise their son, giving him absolute freedom with no limits, accountability, haya or ghairat and now all are hiding like cowards hoping this will blow over. Cat fishing, grooming and such contact are sins/crimes for a reason. He needs to man up and come forward and give his version, if he is really such an innocent little chunna kaka. We can be sure his online search and browser history will be interesting too. There is a reason morality and limits apply to both boys and girls in islam, but not in Pakistani culture.

Fraud Gold digger Exploiter But never blame the male. It's always the woman's fault in Pakistan.whether foreigner, minority, rich, poor, mute, disabled, blind. Yes the Pakistani male can never be blamed because the Pakistani male was born infallible, innocent and perfect. That's why this particular Pakistani male is hiding like a coward instead of coming forward and take responsibility and tell his version. If this was a foreign guy turning up looking for his Pakistani girl, how many days before she is found dead? But because this is a boy, his family are protecting him, abetting, covering, hiding with him. Still we believe there are no issues in Pakistan. The way that poor woman is being paraded in front of cameras is making a mockery of her. Where is the photo of the boy? Even the police is covering up. Shame on the boy, his parents and all those supporting him.

@Amjadkhan, She was clearly not a gold-digger. But the young dude came to a realization, that a Green Card, nor even a visit Visa to the US application will not be successful when the Embassy determines a marriage fraud on his part to supposedly marry this woman nearly twice his age and gave him cold feet. It does not take a genius to see what his plan was and when she arrived in Pakistan to actually marry him, he had a rude awakening, when someone told him about the current US government and his chances of fooling her and the US officials to enter the US with fake loveless marriage. She has been saved from this fool and should cut her losses and return to her family in the US.
