Mumbai police took into custody a suspect allegedly involved in the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, Indian media reported on Friday.

Saif, 54, was stabbed six times at his Mumbai residence during an attempted burglary in the early hours of Thursday and is currently hospitalised.

According to the Indian Express the alleged suspect was brought to the Bandra police station on Friday morning for questioning. The accused is allegedly related to one of Saif’s staff members who allowed him to enter the actor’s apartment, the police said. Authorities are also questioning the staff member.

A glimpse of the alleged attacker was caught on CCTV cameras inside the building. He was locked in a room at Saif’s residence, but managed to escape, Indian Express reported.

Mumbai police registered an FIR with non-bailable sections of the Indian criminal code against the accused, the publication said.

Kareena Kapoor Khan issues statement

Saif’s wife and fellow actor Kareena Kapoor Khan issued a statement on Thursday night, requesting the media afford the family privacy.

“It has been an incredibly challenging day for our family, and we are still trying to process the events that have unfolded. As we navigate this difficult time, I respectfully and humbly request that the media and paparazzi refrain from the relentless speculation and coverage.”

Shared to her official Instagram handle, the post said the constant scrutiny and attention were not only overwhelming but posed a risk to their safety.

“I kindly request that you respect our boundaries and give us the space we need to heal and cope as a family,” Kareena wrote.

Pakistani politician reacts

Former Pakistani information minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain in a post on X said, “SRK threatened, Salman Khan targeted more than once and now Saif Ali Khan stabbed, Mumbai is not safe for Muslim superstars.”

His speculations have not been addressed by Indian authorities, nor have they indicated that this was anything more than a burglary gone wrong.

His post referred to Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan receiving a threatening call, made directly to a police station in Bandra, last November. Mumbai police later arrested Faizan Khan, a lawyer from Chhattisgarh for allegedly issuing a death threat and demanding INR 5 million

In April 2024, two members of the Bishnoi gang were arrested by Indian police for firing at the home of actor Salman Khan in retaliation for the superstar’s killing of two antelopes. Salman has been in the crosshairs of the group since 1998 for shooting two blackbucks on a recreational hunting trip. The gang’s jailed leader Lawrence Bishnoi has threatened Khan with assassination in the past.

Burglaries don't usually end with shootings. This seemed to be a personal thing. Enmity. The burglary serving as a pretext. Hope justice is served.

The great Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was right when he asked during the British Rule in Hindustan (India) a separate homeland for Muslims called Pakistan. The Muslims and Sikhs are not safe in Hindustan (India) and abroad.

It’s all about security issues and nothing else, the residential area need to have proper security system day and night. Digital security system is very advanced now-a-days and no one can escape easily without being arrested by police.

India not safe for muslims? Muslims are superstars in Bollywood. Muslims can occupy high offices in the Govt of India. Can a minority person become anything in Pakistan? Shah Rukh Khan was threatened by Faizan Khan, (a muslim) a lawyer from Chhattisgarh. Playing the victim card won't work all the time.

Someone should ask Fawad Chaudhry, if Pakistan is safe for Muslims or anyone for that matter? Yes, perhaps for the likes of Hafiz Saeed & Dawood Ibrahim.

@Multani and Anonymouseee None of you have been to India. So pray tell, how can you speak on behalf of Indias 200+ million Muslims and how do you know its not safe for them? Let's not go overboard seeing religious persecution everywhere or letting incidents uncertain areas be speak for all. They probably have it much better than our local minorities in Pakistan. No forced conversions and rapes or labels of heretics etc. Maybe we should worry about that. I hope one day we are able to travel to India and experience it first hand it's people and culture. Maybe we'll be wiser.

My sympathies with the family. Hope SAK gets back into perfect condition soon. However, it must be pointed out that normally celebrities seek as much publicity as possible. It probably helps them demand higher fees. They are responsible for the growth of paparazzi, etc. Naturally, at times like this the paparazzi become hyperactive! I lived near this locality, Bandra, and went to school there in the 1960s. There wasn't a single building with even 5 floors. Everyone living there was a local Christian, all middle class or from humble backgrounds. No celebrity, no crime.

@JAMIL SOOMRO - Please don’t speak for the Muslims or Sikhs of India. Instead take care of your own minorities who are second class citizens as per your country’s constitution and are living in horrific conditions as per UNHRC & Amnesty International.

@ABC Nobody claimed it was. Don't be fooled by the word Islamic in our country's official name. It's just for show. Unofficial religion is moral corruption and hypocrisy. Back to India. Clearly not safe for Indians. Especially the poor but apparently also the rich are not safe....
