Filmmaker Nabeel Qureshi paid tribute to Indian actor Om Puri on his eighth death anniversary, saying he still can’t believe he passed away.

Puri starred in the Pakistani director’s 2016 film Actor in Law, and Qureshi highlighted that very early in his career he had the “rare privilege” of working with Puri.

Sharing heartwarming pictures of the actor on set, Qureshi said, “I was just 30 when I got the chance to direct this extraordinary actor, someone whose craft was larger than life, yet whose heart was even bigger.

“But my connection with him went far beyond work. The bond we built while working together remains one of the most cherished chapters of my life. Om Puri Ji was so loving, caring, and full of warmth — a compassionate human being above all else.”

He said that in the short span of time they shared, they made unforgettable memories in Pakistan, India and Dubai. Qureshi described Puri as incredibly hospitable, a true foodie and someone who made him feel at home in his presence.

“I still remember how excited we were about meeting again in February 2017 for the PSL in Dubai. He had this unique ability to make everyone feel comfortable — so much so that I would sometimes forget I was sitting with a living legend and take his kindness for granted. He was that humble, that approachable.”

The director continued that he and producer Fizza Meerza often reminisced about him and relived the warmth and wisdom he shared.

“We miss him deeply. Om Puri Ji was a man beyond borders, an artist who stood for peace and humanity. May his soul rest in eternal peace. His legacy continues to inspire us, and his memories will forever be etched in our hearts.”

It is nice to see a public expression of recognition of talent irrespective of religion, race, ethnic origin, that too amongst the younger generation who have so much to gain by this attitude.

Why is death of an Indian actor so important for DAWN??

@JB Because we, Pakistan, are part of the Subcontinent in South Asia and throughout decades were the largest importer of Indian Bollywood movies, songs and in addition, we share a desi culture, no matter how much some of us suffer from identity crisis and want to claim Persian, Arab, Turkish etc identity. However, had you read the article, it is not about the death of an Indian actor but rather the tributes paid by a Pakistani filmmaker, Nabeel Qureshi on said actors 8th anniversary.
