Veteran Indian actor Om Puri passed away early this morning, reportedly after a massive heart attack.

Hundreds took to social media to express their shock and sorrow over his loss.

His admirers included many Pakistani celebrities who — like his Actor In Law co-star Fahad Mustafa said — remembered him for his work and "humble and loving nature".

Meesha Shafi fondly remembered the time she spent with him on the sets of The Reluctant Fundamentalist:

As did her co-star Riz Ahmed, who called him one of his role models:

Humayun Saeed remembered him for his courage

Sarmad Khoosat didn't have words to express his grief:

Mahira Khan remembered him as a superior artist:

Yasir Hussain shared a picture with his tribute:

Mr. Puri earlier played roles in which he denigrated Pakistan and Pakistanis. Let's not go overboard with these condolences.

He was against nationalistic jingoism and a voice of friendship between the two nations.

It sounds really scary; he had aged faster than his age and looked older. A doctor one said pain of a heart attack is so extreme that one cannot even speak and then there is darkness in front of your eyes untill you go into oblivion and discover religion is man made and there is nothing there.

@Urwa Thanks for the suggestion but please speak for yourself. Others, on both sides of the border, see him differently as a messenger of peace. People like you will always cast aspersions on larger than life figures - the real question you should be asking is whether the character he played (which you are referring), how far from truth was it in real life ? If not, then you shouldnt complain. Most films in which Om Puri acted, are a reflection of the society we live in. One should call for introspection within our own self and the people around us after watching such films.

@Daniyal : Really, how is that. Life goes on where Death is the another aspect of being alive. Only if we can understand that this is a short stay on this earth and a long life waiting on the other side. We might stop killing each other for nothing and live in peace and harmony

@Urwa it is difficult to make this world a peaceful place when we have xenophobic people like you in our society. You should look into yourself and think what you can do to combat prejudice and bigotry.

It is a curious thing, the death of any famous personality. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. Mr. Puri was a great person with lot of love for humaninity. He has a courage to talk truth in front of his own people, this quality is not found in many,
