Film and stage actor Nargis was allegedly subjected to brutal torture by her husband, a police inspector, in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on Friday.

A video clip shared on social media showed the actor with multiple bruises on her face, eyes, and other parts of her body.

Born Ghazala Idrees, Nargis had been a highly paid stage performer and also acted in over 100 films during her career.

She alleged that she was subjected to torture by her husband, Inspector Majid Bashir, when she refused to transfer her property to his name.

The Defence C police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Bashir and claimed to have conducted raids for his arrest, but to no avail so far.

The actor alleged in the FIR that her husband wanted to accommodate the former wife of a famous TV host in her (Nargis’) house without her consent. She also alleged that Bashir wanted her to transfer the ownership of her farmhouse to his name.

“Majid Bashir repeatedly hit my face with his official gun, leaving bruises, particularly, in and around my eyes,” she said in the FIR.

She said her husband also put the barrel of his gun in her mouth in an attempt to injure her jaw.

The actor said that Bashir wanted to grab a valuable nine-kanal plot, gold ornaments and other properties, belonging to her, at gunpoint.

“He [Bashir] had also subjected me to brutal domestic violence thrice in the past, but each time I ignored the act of extreme violence just to save my marriage,” she added.

On Friday, she said, her husband crossed “all limits”, dragged her from her hair, humiliated and beat her up black and blue in front of her nephew and employees.

She alleged that the suspect also planned her murder and warned her that he would put the blame on her enemies.

Cantonment Division Operations SP Awais Shafiq told Dawn that Bashir was at large and the police were conducting raids for his arrest.

About his posting, he said, Bashir had already been closed to the police lines after he was placed under suspension over some complaints.

It was the second incident of brutal torture of Nargis reported in Lahore. Earlier, she was beaten black and blue allegedly by dismissed police inspector Abid (boxer) in March 2002 when she was at the peak of her acting career.

In the previous incident occurring in her house in Johar Town, Lahore, she had suffered 39 injuries, while Abid had also shaved off her eyebrows and head, as per police records.

This is a very unacceptable behavior of a husband towards his wife, abusing his wife or children is unacceptable by all means, the law does not allow any such thing to abused, let’s law of the land decide what next punishment would be to her husband and justice will be served in court.

What a gigantic, gruesome, grisly, grim, ghastly, grave, gross and great tragedy? Are we still living in the dark ages? Can police inspectors do whatever they want including harming, threatening, insulting and physically beating and injuring their own wives with impunity, protection, immunity, exemption and security?

Very sad. Nargis is a beautiful talented actress. Her acting is very natural and honest. We miss her these days. But she married a just a police inspector while she could has a better educated man? Sorry for her. Better divorce him and come over to USA for a better open life.

@S. Akhtar According to HRCP (National Commission of Human rights Pakistan) over 90% of Pakistani women have faced domestic violence in their lifetime. Pakistans population is 230 million. More than half of them are females. So yes, indeed millions of Pakistani women go through violence and abuse daily. Collective societal denial ensures this evil circle to continue and be normalised and abusive males not be held accountable. Keep in mind, this Pakistan not the US where violence against women is both punished and condemned. Unlike in Pakistan where it's normalised and females are raised to accept it or face social stigma. It even happens in privileged, educated, affluent families behind closed doors where other members think it doesn't happen. It even happens in Pakistani families settled abroad.

If Abid Boxer had punished in the first incidence against Nargis in year 2002 then her husband Bashir would have not dared committing torture to Nargis!!!

such horrendous acts vividly signify the importance of policing for women. there should be a sound mechanism in place to prevent such kind of incidents. women have suffered a lot at the expense of social norms. let us get rid of these norms and pursue such cases with utmost diligence which can help the victim to get justice.

Nothing new. Violence against women born out of the deep rooted, heavy indoctrination and normalised misogyny is every day across Pakistan. The only positive is that compared to a few years back at least such news now raise eye brows and many condemn it. Read the article from 2002 in Dawn archives when Nargis was beaten by a police man. Never the less, violence will continue as long as females are told, it's normal and they should just pray, have patience and compromise no matter what, but never come back home to their parents or seek divorce because then what about the kids and family honor etc. Nothing is going to come of this case either. Similar to Samaa TV hostess Ayesha Jahangir who silently tolerated her husband's abuse, then went public, filed a FIR, for divorce and then reconciled with him. If your husband puts his hand on you, your marriage is over and there is no honor or respect for you in such a "marriage". Cowards hit. Real men communicate, work it out or just divorce.
